1960 Kodiaks

As the year 2010, and more importantly the hunting seasons of 2010, comes to a close I thought I would like to revive some last looks at our bows.

I could not believe what was happening when I discovered these bows purely by chance. It was like Christmas came early. Last week I was just another gatherer of Bears, today I am a Bear collector.

Kinda wish that I had discovered them earlier so that I could hunt with one of them, then again it was only by the strangest of chances that I discovered them at all.

Don or Rich, not sure if you can see the lams in the windows. Is this standard for these bows or would it have been a special order type situation? Most certainly, with consecutive serial numbers the bows were ordered rather than bought off the shelf.

For right now I do not even know the name of the original owner. His widow is going to write me some information about him.

those are butcher block ibeams in both bows pretty cool looking.They are somewhat common and somewhat rare pending on what your looking for in a 1960.Those are both super neat bows bd

I was not going to shoot them right away and then I realized that I still have 2 weeks of season left. My buddy is sending me a string and I should be up and running later this week.

So I discovered two interesting bits of information today:

1. The original owner of the bows was very British, and his name was Donald Patrick Betteredge (what a name for someone who shoots broadheads).

2. He was a handgun shooter as well. I fully believe that he ordered these bows as a 38 and 45.

Does anyone have knowledge of another 38 pound 1960 Kodiak, just seems like an odd weight.

Butcher Block 1960 Kodiaks are cool. I have a 56", 60" and 64" Butcher Block.

There are some 1960 Kodiaks around in weighs under 40#. I have a left hand that is 36#, "Al's bow". There were a few Kodiaks made under 30#, but I only know of just one that is less than 20#, it's a 1959.

I would be interested in that one if it were a 32 Jack. I am only going to collect 1960 Kodiaks in draw weights that reflect handgun calibers. Close but no cigar.

So 22, 25, 30, 32, 9mm, 38, 40, 41, 44, 45, 50. I should be able to complete this collection easily if I live to be 125 years old.

On a more serious note thanks for keeping me motivated on old Bears, Jack. I am going to go out and shoot a mule deer doe or maybe a big fawn with the Polar tomorrow morning. I will take a stand in the cab of my friend's hay hauler truck. He says I may want to just shoot one out a window of his house.

DD you can't do bow transactions on this platform, you have to take that to the Classifieds.  We'll get shut down again over this type of thing.  

Those 1960's are really beautiful bows, and the best shooting of all the old Bears in my opinion.

 I think Dave was just having fun with me. I sold him the 63 Polar a few weeks ago.

 I call the 31# Kodiak the Owl Bow because of the character grain in the handle wood. It was the first real collectable bow I bought last winter when I started gathering a few Bear bows. At one time I considered selling it to fund another 60' in hunting weight. I found a 64" 1960 at a reasonable price that fit that bill though so I think I will just keep this one too. A guy can't have too many 60 Kodiaks can he?

Jack, thats a sweet 31 pounder you have their would make some kid a good hunting bow. I just trades for a RH '64 Kodiak 33# for my daughter and am in the process of refinishing it for her and am hopefully getting a LH '64 Kodiak from Felix next spring. Next year will be Mattie's first year to hunt so it's going to be fun for both of us but looks like I'll have to give up my secret spots.

I should have known something was in between the lines.  The 1960 Kodiak is my favorite looker and shooter.  I've got a 64" 60lb and a 64" 65lb that both shoot right with any of my modern customs...only quieter.

 If you are going to give up your spots I can't think of anyone better to show them to. Keep us posted on how the refinish is going on her Kodiak and your Super Kodiak.

 Those higher weight 60' Kodiaks are pretty hard to come by as well.
