Low Cost Wood Shafts?
« on: December 11, 2007, 09:32:00 AM »
Heya all was wondering if there are any low cost wooden shafts out there?  I dont want to invest $100 into my first set of woodies being I've never made arrows and just want a few to beat around in the back yard and test some things out and all that good stuff.

What would ya'll reccomend for me to use?  Or do they simply not exist LOL.

Give Tom Braun a call in Lemmon SD. 605-374-5958.
He makes fir shafts. Its been a few months since I bought any from him but the parallels were something like $18 or $20 pr dozen and I think the tapered ones were $26.

If you want completed arrows check with Northwest archery - nwarchery.com or Bill at Alleghany arrow woods - arrowwoods.com .

Both make quality arrows at a very fair price. They will be plain, sealed, fletched, nocked and most important straight. They will run about $60.

sorry about that, my computer suttered.

They are all spined and matched by weight.  In my expereince fir is a little heavier and tougher than POC, but they probably arent quite as straight on average.

Get the 'tedter' pack from 3 rivers and use OL adcock bareshaft tuning method.
Good shafting makes good arrows I would not recommend skimping there.

Hey Jeff the rivers in new jersey all glow a pretty yellowish green. I think they should stay away from them...

Cheap, good, fast. Pick two. Seriously, if you want cheap, American Woodcrafters has birch dowels for $25.00/100. They are dowels, not arrow shafts, but they can be made to shoot well with a little work.

Call John at Twig Archery.  He carries poplar, cedar, ramin (and some more I can't remember).  His prices are as good as anybody and better than most.  Never got a bad shaft from him.  He'll get ya fixed up and ready to go!

I have to say, i am an expert at things on the cheap.  once you do the research and decide on your shaft vendor consider the following ideas.

My very first set of woodies i simply cut to length with a knife, tapered the shafts with a super cheap pencil sharpener style taper tool, stained with what i had in the garage, kncked with white knocks, fletched with feathers i bought but borrowed a feather chopper and then put 125 grain field points.  i never put a finish on those arrows.  nor did i crown dip of crest them.  funny thing is that those arrows lasted me for 10 years.  they flew the best of any arrows i ever made.

If you have any questions feel free to drop me a line.  Good luck, Jack
