1959 Kodiak Special - pics and questions
« on: September 20, 2011, 06:40:00 PM »
Ok, guys, remember I'm NOT a collector...  ;)

I just picked up this '59 Kodiak Special, the price seemed right and I wanted to fool around with one some.  The bow is in great shape, better than I expected.  Only a couple little dings, 2 very small stress lines; no holes, no twists.  The only marks on it pretty much are string wax.  Came with an old feather rest and a newer string (looks like Dacron, but I'll wait for a new one before I shoot it).  As you can see serial number 7SX7, marked 40@30 and 70 inches long.  It is quite a bit heavier than that - my bow scale is a POS, but comparing scaled wt with my crappy scale to 4 other bows that I trust the marked wt on, I think this one is 43-45 at 28 (close to 50 at 30).  I looked at Wade's thread, this one seems to have pretty narrow tips and doesn't have any black tip overlays over the white glass on the belly.  Also has a 2/2 stamp on the riser below serial number info - and that means??

Ok, what do I have here - refinished bow?  Doesn't appear to be but???

Here's some pics:

Thanks for any info you guys can give!!

Ryan

Ryan, just my thought is it has not been refinished, but their are people hear who have a better eye than me. Either way enjoy the bow their very pleasant to shoot.

Hmmm, that 2 over 2 stamp is interesting.

Ryan - Congrats on your bow, '59 was the year I was born, and always kinda wanted one of those, kinda like a '59 Les Paul guitar...8^)

Ryan,
From what I have read, a "2" stamp meant the bow was blemished in some way and a "22" stamp meant there was some type of defect.

Ryan.
Very Nice bow. The 22 should not concern you in my experience.
No defect found on the many bows that I have and had with 22.
Enjoy.......Philip

Glad to see those pics-you got a good one there Ryan. Very uncommon specs too. Hope you enjoy it. Does not look to have been refinished.

Thanks for the info - I appreciate it.

I couldn't stand it today and had to shoot it a couple times.  I grabbed a couple of lighter arrows (relatively speaking) and ran a few through.  That bow shoots nice!  I'm not a fan of low wrist grips, but it sure spits out a cedar and is well behaved even without cat whiskers on yet.  I unstrung it and put it away....deer season starts in a week and I need to quit fooling around and get dialed in with the hunting bow!  I'll play with this one next Spring!
