1962 coins that I have had seem to have black paint that will flake off if it is cracked and brittle

This is a 1961 Grizzly I used to own. No finish would have been applied to this coin, as I believe the coin would have been installed after the camo paint in the case of a factory camo bow. The coin is black with the ring around the edge and various highlight of pewter showing through. I would like to add that in condition like this the coin is very attractive.

It would be relatively easy to paint the coin and polish the raised areas leaving the low areas in relief.. This most likely would have been done before installing the coin..
I don't know but I favor the paint theory, Hard for me to believe it would oxidize as much as that.

The catalog does not show the coin,, any one have a picture of a new one early in its' life?

Earl - I don't have a picture, but it can be seen in the video "The Oldest Game" if you have those old Bear movies.

Age old question...or at least 50 years old.  I purchased (traded for) my first 62K in the summer of 1964.  I do not recall the degree of "blackening" and finding an old photo would be an adventure in itself.  I do recall that the bow had a darkened coin.  I never gave it any thought in my youth as to whether or not it was oxidation or paint or a reaction to the applied finish.  It was what it was!

When I bought this 62K years back, there was no chipping of the coin "finish".  Over the last year or so, I guess because it has been getting shot more and more at the 3-D shoots, the coin "finish" has started to flake off, showing the plain pewter surface.  IF it was NOT painted, I doubt that we could call it oxidation.....pewter is slow to oxidize.  I think it would be more accurately termed a "reaction" to the finish that was used.

I brought this one along as a backup bow on a MD sika hunt last month and Jack Guard took some detailed photos of it on a sunny day.

Hayslope- good point about oxidation. I know little about pewters reaction, and I never liked chemistry, but I have tried to find some information on the net.

The oxidation is a result of the lead in pewter. This causes a darkening. This is a typical pewter finish. Oxidants can be chemicals or simply oxygen. Can pewter oxidize beneath finish, cut off from air? I don't  know, but I am thinking not.

Perhaps the finish was supposed to look like oxidized pewter?

I believe this picture is proof that the black is not from oxidation. It is a 61 Grizzly. NO finish over coin. Look at the rim of the coin? Is it black? NO. Is there black on the coin? YES. Is it from Oxidation? NO.

My guess is that they painted the coin black before installation and then sanded/polished/scraped the coin to leave some of it in relief. Another, TradGanger proposed something similar above.

Senior moment for sure..........not long after I posted this, I was racking my brain because I seemed to recall an even earlier "all zebrawood" Bear bow.    :knothead:

I now believe the 1961 Kodiak Special was the first (or at least the first one that I remember)!  Anyone else vote for the 61 KS as the first?

You have a sweet rack full of 62s!  I especially love the 62K with the sapwood.  Quite the looker.
