String Help Needed Guys
« on: May 15, 2012, 08:58:00 PM »
Hey Everyone, I am new to this forum and to the trad world (well, mostly new-I shot alot when I was a kid but was converted to guns, now I'm back) and I have some string worries. I am finding alot online about new strings for old bows, and some of the statements are contradictory. Plus, I don't have a trad bowyer around although we do have a big spacebow dealer. What I am most concerned about is stringing my 69" Temujin and my 66" Tartar. I also have a 52" Kodiak Magum which will need a string sooner rather than later. I have heard that these work best short strung. Does anyone know if that's true? Also, I am reading that they can't take some modern string materials. Perhaps I need a reputable online dealer since I am in the sticks. I am a rookie, please help!

Popular thought... "older bows use only B50 dacron strings".

Many here may use more modern higher strength, lower stretch material and pad out the loops.  Most with good results.  But most bowyers will not recommend it for bows not specifically made for them.  Nuff said for me.

I use B50 or B55 for all of my older bows. Period. I may be a bit of a chicken and am not very concerned with milking out a tad bit higher performance.

Many fine folks (sponsors) here can custom make you a string, or you can buy them from merchants (some fine ones are sponsors here too).

Call any one of them.   Talk  to them.  Let them know about the bow for which they are making/selling you a string.  Have the bow with you.  They may even ask what arrows (nocks) you are using.

But most of all...  have fun begining your journey with trad bows and don't sweat the small stuff.  Just fling them arras.
