I've got a Benchmade - I've forgotten what it's called-- ~3" tanto frame lock folder that I belt-clip to my pant waist. Very handy.
In the field, I've tried carrying a sensible and very servicable Solingen 4" bowie style -- but I find myself regretting that I left my KBar behind.
The KBar is one that I've had for 36 years! (Uh-oh: I got old, somehow!) The secondary bevels have been polished and blued and the edge just seems to stay "right" despite all the nicks I've had to sharpen out of the thing. I use it to clean up blinds and stands and slip through green briar: just a flick of the wrist and the briars fall to the ground. It works on deer and hogs, too.
For skinning, a full-tang Schrade Old Timer with a very dropped-pointed 3-1/2" blade: four deer this year and only on the last one did I think, "This knife is going to need some attention, soon."
