1959 Kodiak Special retail price in 1959?
« on: June 12, 2012, 11:25:00 PM »
I see where in 1962, the Kodiak Special was listed and among the most expensive bows in the catalog.
From an older post here...
1962....Grizzly 39.95 new..Kodiak 59.95 new..Kodiak Magnum 64.95 new..Kodiak Special 74.95 new..Polar 49.95 new..Cub 24.95

Were the Kodiak Specials in 1959 more expensive than the 1959 Kodiaks, retail? What was the retail price for a 59 Grizzly?

How about a 1960-61 Polar?

Thanks in advance.

'Mojo", according to the catalogs:
1959 Kodiak Special was $69.50; the Kodiak $59.50
1959 Grizzly was $47.50

The 1960 Polar was $39.50; the 1961 Polar was $49.50

Hope this helps.

60.00 was easily enough for 240 gallons of gasoline in 1959-about 1000.00 today depending on where you live, and high test or low.
What does that say about bow prices today?

The Kodiak Special was always the top of the line bow in its day...never been as popular with collectors as the Kodiaks so consequently lower prices today...they are great shooters and great eye candy...I think the 59, 60 and 61 Kodiak Specials are some of the best looking production bows ever made...all I have is a 61 and a 63 (gave my 62 to a friend) but that will get rectified one day soon

Yep, I love how they look and how they shoot also.

However, it seems most of these Specials were of target length (64-70") and usually of lower weights.  Finding one of shorter lengths and 50# or so would be nice.

I passed on a 63 inch 1963 KS a while back because Bearbowman wanted more than I was willing to pay...I think it was also a pretty high draw weight....that bow was in virtually new condition...someone whose birth year is 1963 paid his price of 600+...more recently he has a 64 inch 59 KS for sale...I think it is in the high 40's draw weight....thing is with my 30 inch plus draw length a 64 inch recurve is nice and usually bumps the draw weight up by 4 to 6 punds

I have a nice 59 special that is 50# at 30", BUT the piece is 68", so sure wish it was 64".  It's still one of the best shooters on my rack.

Lon,
68" sure shoots sweet. I have a minty 68" 1958KS that's 39lbs and I will never part with it. It's silky smooth and whisper quiet. A great ground hunting bow for eastern whitetails.

My knowledge and experience is limited compared to most but I think the KS line is the overall best shooting bow Bear made and if more were produced in the higher hunting weights of 50#+ they'd be more sought after. So very smooth to bring to anchor and shoot, great grips and very nice looking. That being said I wish I still had my '60 @ 45#.

Came across this thread about the '59 Kodiak Specials. Thought I'd share a few pics of mine.

64" 55# @ 28" It is a real shooter. Can't say as much for the photographer.

I sometimes envy collectors and the pristine bows.
