63 Dogleg why only one year?
« on: July 03, 2012, 04:48:00 PM »
Just like the Kodiak vs. Super Kodiak question. Look how radically different the 63 Kodiak or Grizzly's are. Why were they only made one year? Did the bow not sell, was it poor performance was the time not right or was it a mistake?

You look at the 62 or the 64 and you are basically back to the natural evolution of the bows that Bear was putting out. But no way can you say that about the 63 makes you wonder why the change and why did it not last?

I mean they did not even come back with a subtle design change they just cut it out of their line up totally.

Makes me wonder out of curiosity more than anything else.

I'm no expert by far but.... I heard that the design was said to be weak and would break in the handle. I have owned 2 dogleg kodiaks and did not find that to be true with either one. I shot them both numerous times with no problem at all. I regret selling the last one I had.

I think there were so many Kmags that broke in 63 that Bear decided to discontinue the so called dog leg style. Even though the problems were mostly with the first or type I Kmags. Kodiaks, Grizzlies, and cubs from what I have seen were OK. Just my thoughts and not fact by any means.

I think the 63 Kodiak is an excellent all around shooter.
Once in a while you can find them with spectacular wood in the risers - I believe it is Bubinga and on occasion it can have a very cool waterfall look to it.
I'd guess that the issues with some models - I think it was mostly first run K-Mags and Grizzlies as mentioned above, that led to the change in the 64 models.
Maybe its just me and the fact that 1963 is the year I was born, but I like the homely look of the dogleg bows!

Because 1963 was only one year???   :bigsmyl:

Seriously, the bad luck with the Mag probably killed the whole idea.

I'm another '63 Kodiak fan.  BTW, Fred killed his famous Indian Tiger with one of these.

I also agree that the failures of the Kodiak Magnums of that year left a bad taste in Fred's mouth and a hole in his bank account.  Of course, if that had not happened we would probably not have our famed '64 models, right?

But the '64 was a one year model too and that was a great bow.

I guess Bear just had to change the looks of each model every year to max out sales.  Most were winners, but sometimes an Edsel or Corvair comes along.
