Fred Bear Hunting Arrows

Think I posted this earlier in the wrong forum. I am doing some personal research, I would like to know if there is anybody out there that has some of Freds personal hunting arrows that Fred actually hunted with,arrow length,color of fletching, helical or straight, feather length arrow total weight any other specs you can think of. Keep in mind I am looking for the ACTUAL arrows Fred himself used please!!

The search feature should get you a couple threads with pics of Fred's personal arrows.

there's literally hundreds of pictures of Fred Bear online and in magazines.  He used a lot of different arrows.

Trap" thanks for the offer I am not looking to buy or build any repros, I would like as much info on THE ARROWS that Fred used himself(I know someboby has got to have one or two some where. I am looking for solid concrete specs on the arrows in question.

Motorhead7963, I guess you didnt read through those threads or perhaps you misunderstood my offer.

The specs I have are of Fred's actual arrows.  You're welcome to those specs if you want them.  

I built some repros for John Kabisa.  The specs he gave me (which are very detailed) are from some of Fred's arrows that John acquired.  I wasnt offering to build you repros  or sell you repros, but I will send you a photocopy of the specs John sent to me if you want them.

OK Trap" I must be blind or something, I looked thru both complete threads and didn't find any specs on Freds actual arrows, I gotta be missing something here help me out.. and yes I would like those specs if you can I will PM you my email.

After the new year I will help you with the specs of actual hunting arrows I have that PapaBear hunted with at Grousehaven in the mid 80s.

Go to the below link,(that Trap posted earlier)
and scroll down to the bottom of page 1 and read Johnnyrazorheads post. He has one version of Freds arrows pictured, as well as the repros that Trap made for him, And I think Trap has offered to get the specs to you.
Dave and Philip will have other options later in the week.
I may want to make some "Bear arrows" up for my self. 1967 versions.

One info source could be Dick Lattimer's book, I Remember Papa Bear. It has a section where Fred answers questions about his equipment. The arrows are discussed mostly on pp 75-78. He talks about his hunting arrows. I'd consider it general info, rather than specific, but you might find something useful there.

I believe Fred provided that information to Lattimer sometime in 1974. Lattimer noted that Fred was using aluminum arrows at that time.

One other thing to keep in mind if wanting to duplicate his set up; although Mr Bear shot 65# bows, he did not like them to be cut to center and he usually built out the side plate with a 1/4" piece of leather. (pg 46 in The Archer's Bible 1st edition 1968, pg 48 in the 1980 revised edition)

Because of this, his arrow spec should show weak if shot out of a 65# bow with a "factory cut" sight window.

I don't know if that is your intent but it should be kept in mind when looking at Bear's arrow specs.

I read in one of the books about Bear he went down to the shop floor and picked up the arrows for his hunt of off the line. Is this true?  I have also read he was more concerned about the spine than the weight of the arrows. Yes/no?

Motorhead, What arrows, Do you want to know about ? Fred Shot, Wood, aluminum and fiberglass arrows,With that being said each kind is going to be different over all, Are you trying to make arrows for yourself to shoot out of your bow, Or just to have, As you can see from the pixs posted Fred shot a his later aluminum and glass arrows with two yellow hen feathers andva red cock feather, Many photo of his wood arrows he used real turkey feathers, like all the other archers of his day, like any archer he used what he had, So just google Fred Bear, many photos of him ans his arrows will come up, I have one of his wood arrows from the 1940s, its 29 b.o.p has three turkey feathers 5" long short low profile cut,wood arrow is 11/32 from what I can tell and the whole arrow his painted green, with a red nock..

On Page 75 of Lattimer's book (cited above), Fred said he used 9 gr/lb arrows with his 65# bow. The total arrow weight was between 575 and 600 grains. Those were aluminum arrows (Bear Magnum #320) with an ID of 0.280" and an OD of 0.320".  :readit:  

That would be equivalent to a "fat" Easton 2020 shaft, if such a thing existed today. I have no charts for the old Bear Archery aluminum shafts so I can't compare the spine of his Magnum #320 arrows to the spine of a vintage Easton 2020.

On my vintage Easton chart, the 2020 spine is given as 0.385 and that shaft might be just a bit stiff for one of Fred's 29" BOP arrows with a 4-blade Razorhead up front.  :dunno:  

Fred said his draw length was 28" and he always shot the Razorheads with the bleeders installed.

Someone might want to run Stu's calculator to check on that setup with a 65# Bear T/D.  :confused:  The calculator program won't run on my ancient computer here at the house.

I have the Fred Bear video collection and I have watched them all several times and that is what got me to thinking about his arrows that He used, none of his videos go into detail, the closest is when he is out with Fess Parker on a hunt. Many of the other videos show him just pulling arrows out of what looks like a box of arrows off the production line that he picked out for a particular hunt/game he was going on. I do realize that He used many different setups over the years wood/fiberglass, and aluminum kinda figured that there would be a constant setup he stuck with/with the different materials used through the years.
