59 Kodiak Special needs repair
« on: December 13, 2013, 12:24:00 PM »
So bummed. Got a sweet deal on a SK. It arrived with a crack in it - straight through the wood! argh. The photos of the auction (not the big auction site) did not show any damage. No returns.

Question: is anyone on the list doing repairs of this nature? It is way out of my league... needs serious loctite 420!
BowDoc? is he still around? I never had any luck when i tried to contact him once, a while back.

I would really like to have this fixed - it is a beauty!

It goes through the whole limb?

yes - it does go through to the other side. But not all the way up to the limb edge.

I would never feel good about shooting that one.

If that goes all the way through I would not attempt to ever shoot it.  It is a bummer.  Those are wonderful bows.  I am sorry

I'm sorry for your misfortune.

If it were mine, and I had no desire for a wall hanger, I'd completely fill that crack from both sides with Locktite 420 and once set, add long over and underlays.

My 59 Kodiak Special has black underlays from the factory.  Your bow would need longer ones and the added stiffness may give it a slight static effect but it may become shoot-able.

I'd wear eye and perhaps head protection until I felt confident in the repair though.  It's a tough call, it's only value is as a wall hanger and even that value (whatever that may be) will be gone if it doesn't work out but it's a chance that I'd take since I'm out the money already.

I was just thinking that. I don't want a wall hanger. Loctite it best as possible.
But i have to admit I don't know what you mean by long over and under lay. Added laminates?
And if I were to seal it do I have to remove finish? I realize I have to clean the area, but how much?
The bow is nice! No refinishing needed.
Darn crack.

I agree that the best thing is to not shoot it and chalk it up to experience.  No bow is worth trading an eye for.

There is one excellent possible alternative depending on how much you're into the bow, a few years back someone was re-limbing old bows.  A quick search may turn up someone who still offers that service.

Yes, extra fiberglass laminations.  You would need to remove all of the finish in the affected area, including the original tip overlay, before adding long enough pieces on both sides of the limbs to completely cover the cracks.  You would need to do the good limb as well.

No matter what adhesive is used, there is no way that I'd ever try to string that bow, let alone shoot it, without sandwiching that crack with fiberglass on each side.

I would only do this knowing that the value of the bow and possibly the bow itself, will or may be destroyed completely.
