odd Howatt Hunter

Folks; I just bought a Howatt Hunter, 62", 42# with a serial number that indicates 1971. The riser is gorgeous Brazillian rosewood, but it has white glass both sides instead of black or brown glasss. Never saw one with white glass. Can anyone fill me in on it. I have some pics but don't know how to post them here. I could send them e-mail- [email protected].

BTW, that sounds like an interesting piece.  I believe the Monterey was very similar to the Hunter and was subsequently discontinued.  Could the folks at Howatt just wanted to use up the surplus white glass?

In the 60s Howatt used several colors of glass on the limbs, black, white, light green and burnt orange. No rhyme nor reason to me on the pattern either.

I was told the 1st number indicates the year it was made-1971 was the closest to when they were making risers with Brazillion rosewood. Just my guess. That's why I'd like to find out more about it.

It doesn't appear to have ever been shot. The string is the old dacron kind with cotton serving which would be correct for the period.

I may be 100% wrong here, but I think that bow is from the early or mid  '60's.  I'p pretty sure that is when the NE PLUS was in production.  Main characteristic is a beautiful piece of solid rosewood with no accent stripes.  The bow may have been special ordered as a tournament or target bow, hence the white glass.

Just my thoughts ,,, even if they are wrong.  LOL

All of that era Hunters had risers with 3 pieces of rosewood laminated, not solid. Look closely at his bow and mine. I also thought mine was from the early 60s.

You can not date Howatts by the date alone, you really need to see the wood it was made of as certain years had certain options and choices of wood for certain models as well as handle shape.
They changed every 10 years to that same # and from 1959-1963 didnt even use that system but rather the # of the bowyer that made it was the first # as they were paid by piece work.
Marv , your bow is from early to mid 1960s and the color of glass may have been a custom order , they used lots of white on Ventura bows of that era and maybe the customer just wanted white.
I have ordered bows from Howatt with different woods and glass for customers through the years, just by calling Larry and making a change.

With the curved in the riser where it is rounded on the face looks like a 1963 to me It's not flat at the edge so to speak but rounded over on the shelf side...I don't think that roundness went into the bows of the 70's...

When looking at Howatts, keep in mind that their bows didn't have the marking "A.M.O." prior to 1966.  

That is a quick way to determine if it is an earlier or later bow.
