Q about a Kmagnum
« on: December 11, 2014, 10:06:00 PM »
I have been watching E*** for a cheaper Kmagnum bow, not sure why, but I would like to try one out.

I see two very distinct types being offered.  The usual one has the normal tip to tip glass on the back with white and black or other color glass build ups at the handle.

But, I have also seen several others where the handle is apparently cut out and the glass is not there.    In other words the glass on the back goes from tip to the top (or bottom) of handle, but not the whole way.  The handle wood is shaped on the back and there was no colored glass build up as in those described first.

What's up with that ?  Is that a different critter ?

Are you possibly talking about a 1963 dogleg?  I'm trying to picture in my mind any of the magnums that did not have glass at the grip and that is all that I have come up with so far.

I will do a little research

Could be.  Maybe I wasn't paying close enough attention.  In each case, the bow in question had a brown wood (shedua ?) riser, not the future wood or what ever Bear called their impregnated maple.

If you simply do a search of the KMag you will get a good idea of the construction materials used since its introduction in 1961...I am a 30 inch draw guy who never considered owning such a short bow...I corrected that mistake earlier this year

If you are wanting to go with the cheaper end of the magnums, you will need to look at bows no older than the late sixties.  I am rather amazed at the number of magnums on the auction site.  Apparently the magnum was a huge seller for Bear beginning around 1967 or 1968.  I have several of them but hunt with a 1961 because of the coloring of the riser overlay, which is a mid-tone green.  The later 60's bows had bright white overlays on them which a guy would need to cover prior to hunting.

The top three bows are late sixties, maybe even early 70s, the bottom is a 1962.  I couldn't find a photo of the 61 but it is darker rosewood and the overlays are quite a bit darker.  You should be able to find bows similar to the top four in todays market at $200 or less.

I betcha dollar to donuts that someone will be along shortly that will date the bows in the picture.  I am on my way out the door to Christmas shop and just don't have the time.

I couldn't tell from that picture.  My 61 is darker and my 62 is lighter.

There is currently a bow on **** (231423109150) that is as I was describing, with the glass not running full length on the back.

This is not a heads up for anybody, just, I don't know how to move that kind of picture around.

Is that a dog leg ?

No, that is a type 3 1963 K Mag, the type one was what is called a dogleg. Evidently the first type and possibly the type two, which evidently was not much different, had strength issues and were discontinued in favor of type 3.  All other years had the continuous glass with overlays.  The 60" Kodiak in 1963 was a dogleg also.....McK
