Texas Shootout
« on: December 16, 2007, 06:40:00 PM »
Has anyone been to the Texas shootout on the Callaghan Ranch?  My buddy and I are think about going in 2009.  Any info you could give would be great.  How early should we arrive for a good area, or is the whole ranch pretty good?  Do we need a four wheeler or can most of the areas be reach my truck and foot?  We don't own a four wheeler to be honest, but could probably borrow one if we had to.  Is it always the same time of the year?  My buddy works for the Illinois dept of corrections and has to pick his vacation a year in advance.  Thats why we are planning now for 2009.  Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated.

PSE started the Shootout about 15 or so years ago. Its always been on the 90,000 acre ranch and has grown in popularity every year. It seems it has always been the same week but this year they are starting the registration/setup on Wednesday and open Thursday-Sunday for the hunt. Several years it was a muddy quagmire with heavy rains. But I've always heard raves about the hunt. Under 15 yrs.old gets to hunt free and IF it doesn't rain any vehicle can get around on the senderos, roads. Jan.10th is the application deadline this year but a person can show up before Thursday and pay then. It costs a little more and payment type is limited then. I'll post the info I have.

READ THE ENTIRE FLYER AS WE HAVE MADE CHANGES AND YOU MUST BE AWARE OF THEM.

The Texas Shoot-Out Javelina Bowhunt is held on the Callaghan Ranch, Located in Webb County, and 27 miles north of Laredo. We will be hunting approx. 90,000 acres of the thorny, cactus infested terrain of the South Texas brush country. Hunters are assigned to the pasture of their choice providing that the number of hunters has not exceeded the limit of hunters for that pasture. You may switch pastures as openings permit by changing your name to the proper list. This system is used to insure no overcrowding or undue hunting pressure on any one hunting area. In the event it should rain, all motor vehicles will be restricted to the main ranch road, which is clearly defined on the ranch map provided at the store operation inside the ranch. If you are caught in the rain and it appears that it won’t last long, wait it out and give the roads a chance to dry before returning to camp.

REGISTRATION
Registration can be done two ways: (1) you can register at the gate. The gate fee is $195.00 and opens at 10:00 am February 6th, 2008. ONLY CASH, TRAVELERS CHECKS or MONEY ORDERS will be accepted. NO PERSONAL OR BUSINESS CHECKS.
(2) You can pre-register by mail. The Pre-registration fee is $175.00 and must be post marked no later than January 10, 2008. (NO
EXCEPTIONS). If everyone in your vehicle is pre-registered correctly, you will be processed through the main gate much faster. All spaces on the registration form, except rental vehicle information, Out-of-State hunting lic. # (Which can be obtained at any Texas Wal-Mart on the way) and the receipt number we issue, must be completed in order to avoid a possible delay going through the gate. All pre-registered hunters will park on the right side of the road. Everyone in your vehicle must be pre-registered, Free and non-hunters included. BE ADVISED THAT ALL PRE-REGISTRATIONS ARE NON-REFUNDABLE. However, they may be transferred only if you possess the pre-registered hunters receipt or receipt number (NO EXCEPTIONS). All vehicles not pre-registered must park and wait on the left side of the road.

CAMPING
We have one large camp area for all hunters. This area has several roads cut through it. The area along the left fence line will be for those camping with generators. There will be a large fresh water tanker parked inside the camp area gate. The camp area is totally primitive. There is a large trash pit available. Please dispose of all trash in this pit. If you plan to attend this hunt, but are unable to camp, there are several hotels and motels in the Laredo area, approximately 27 miles south of the ranch. May we suggest that you make your reservations in advance to ensure that you have a place to stay?

LICENSE
Texas residents must possess a valid hunting license. Non-residents must obtain a 5-day small game license for $45.00. Obtain your Out-of-State license prior to arrival. You can obtain your Out of State license by mail through the TEXAS PARKS and WILDLIFE DEPT, 4200 Smith School Road, Austin, Texas 78744, or by calling 1-800-792-1112 Mon.-Fri. 8:00 am-5:00 pm. To purchase your hunting license over the phone (charge card only) call 1-800-895-4248. You can also pick the license up at any Texas Wal-Mart on the way to the ranch and give the number to the staff at the gate.

Thanks guys!  I have been to the website and read all the info on there.  Just wanted some additional info from those that have attended it in the past.  Is there a tradgang group that goes there?

I thought there was just another post about this. I have been there for the past few years. It is a good event. There is a lot of game brought in. They have people there to skin your javelina if you do not want to do it yourself. The weather has been very nice, warm days and cool evenings. I have been told it can be very cold, I have not seen that. Be prepared for thorns, you will not believe how bad they are. If it is dry, like 2 years ago, it is the dustiest place I have ever seen. Shots are generally very close, less than 20 yards if you are patient, javelinas do not see well.
