Chinese Thumbrings
« on: May 08, 2015, 02:39:00 PM »
I am looking to research information on Chinese thumbrings, specifically on any information on Willard Bishop's collection.

Thank you for any/all advise.    :)

I note in "A Bibliography of Archery" by Lake and Wright that Bishop wrote an article entitled "On Chinese Archers' Thumbrings", which was published in "Archery" magazine, Volume 26, Nov. 1954, pp. 10-14 and pp. 33-34 with seven photos.  It was reprinted in "Archery" magazine, Volume 34, Nov. 1962, pp. 18-22 and pp. 33-34.  I believe that a number of Bishop's thumbrings went to another collector, who has since passed away.  I'm not sure what eventually happened to the thumbrings.

I can tell you lots about Chinese thumb rings, however not about the collections but the history and usage thereof.

Kay Koppendrayer has written a book about them called Kay's Thumbring Book. It has a lot of interesting history and pictures. I've also switched to shooting with the leather thumbrings she sells. It is a lot more comfortable.

Where do you guys shop for thumb-rings? Online, catalog, in person? Thanks again for all of your help. This has been very helpful for my research!

Look up "king of Rui's" thumbring on the web, I believe it is a copy of a Chinese thumbring
