Red Wing Hunter question
« on: August 12, 2016, 06:31:00 PM »
I acquired a Red Wing Hunter this past weekend. Was wondering if anyone knew about them. It's 58" ntn and 50# @ 28". Looks in pretty good shape just need to get it a string and see how she shoots. She has brown glass and the sticker says A div of Head SKI. SN# RA8768.
I'd appreciate any info you might have.

Thanks

You scored one of the best factory-built recurves ever. I believe Head Ski acquired Wing in '68 and sold to AMF around '72, so somewhere in that time frame. I'm sure someone with more knowledge of the history will be along and pin it down closer.

I have one like yours. Great bow. I put a feather rest on mine. They are well made and good shooting bows. I love mine.

Thanks for the info guys. I put a new string on it tonight and man what a shooter. My old Browning Explorer I may have just been upstaged.

I have a string for it.

Thanks Jack,
I took her over to Cabelas and had some fun shooting her with the guys there. She sure shoots sweet.
One of the limb tips looks like its wanting to twist so I'm gonna leave her strung for a few days and see if that doesn't help.

They are nice. I have a Red Wing Hunter that, according to the guy I got it from, is a 1959 model. It is marked 58". Although I don't shoot it much, it is sweet. At 46# it is easy to shoot. It has never been used much. The old guy told me it lay under his bed from 1959 to 2009 when I bought it.

A great point and shoot bow and nearly indestructible.

I'm another Red Wing Hunter fan.  Great bows that top the Bear Grizzly in many respects.

Them's fighten words Lon!!

Just kidding. I had a RWH with the cutest tiny tips I ever saw. A real tack driver. Felt real smooth and quick. I just didn't shoot it as well as I do my Grizzly.
Heck, I have a very nice custom takedown that sets in the case mostly. I shoot the Grizzly better than it too.
I just really like my Bears.

I have a RWH that I "rescued" from a bad spray paint job. It bears the Wing Archery logo minus any of the later acquisitions. I believe it is mid 60's . I own several Bears and I love them all... but I'll have to say I shoot more consistent and tighter groups with the Red Wing Hunter. Very well made bow especially for the time period it was produced in.

I recently borrowed a RWH that sounds identical to yours Jimmy except 47#.  Serial #RA6433.  Great shooting bow.  Would love to know it's age if someone knowledgeable on here can share some info on her.

My dad bought one in the late 60s or early 70s. I remember shooting it at a milk jug with it. I resently got it from him and have been shooting it a little. Number 2669.

Grateful if anyone can help. I have a pretty mint 58" 55# @ 28 RWH. It is marked Red Wing Hunter by Wing 7104 Maple Ridge Houston 36 Texas S/N  R1585.Not a mark on this bow.
Could any one give me a idea of date of manufacture.

Stormer, i'm guessing your RWH has tiny tips with wood overlays rather than glass. I am embarrassed that I can't remember the year of the move between Jacksonville ,TX and Houston.

Thanks for reply mangonboat you are correct they sure are tiny tips real fine in detail. The 5 overlays seem to include
one of bone or ivory.
Cheers
