shelf wear?
« on: December 20, 2007, 12:35:00 AM »
I'm fairly new to the trad scene. Been shooting alot and it's great.  My arrows seem to fly good. My shelf shows alot of wear rather quickly. It's wearing on the outside (away from the riser). My feathers don't show any unusual wear. Also, the side plate shows a little wear. Gets a little groove in it from the arrow shaft. I've been using the fuzzy part of velcro for the shelf and the harder piece for the side plate, if that matters. Any ideas?

Maybe your shafts are a little stiff. Mine are and I get some wear also.
They are stiff for field points but about right for broadheads I don't worry about the little wear as long as I'm getting good flight.

I had to raise the nock point on one of mine a little over 3/4" to get it to stop wearing on the rug.

Raise the nock a little at a time. If you shoot thru paper while raising it you can get a good idea of whether you are going too far or not enough.

You may also want to try cock feather in and four fletching 60/120 as Kelly of Arrows by Kelly recommended to me. Then you won't have to raise the nock height as high while you also seek the holy grail of proper spine! Personnally I think spine fluctuates with relative humidity and lunar cycles. Oh ya sometimes solar flares effect spine:)

Usually shelf wear on the outside indicates the spine being too stiff.
