After nearly 2 weeks without electricty, my family and I are finally back in our home. We lost power at 6:10PM just as Sandy was gaining strength. The next day, the kids were too cold to keep them here, so we packed up and headed to my parents.
We had little damage, but it was just extremely frustrating getting lied to day after day by LIPA and elected officials. Promises of gas, services, and utilies turned on never panned out. Fears of looting, burglaries, and the oncoming nor'easter made for many sleepless nights. I had to empty 2 freezers and refrigerators of thousands of dollars worth of food, and as I was, I was told by 2 LIPA reps, who were STILL assessing what had happened, 6 days later, that I was not a priority.
I am not asking for prayers for myself or my family, we do not need them. there are others who are in dire need of them. Friends lost theirs homes, their cars, their possessions, and even loved ones. It is like living in a post apocolytic world or Third World nation. People having their basements filled with raw sewage, marsh water, and God knows what else. Those who still have what's left of their homes, have their lives on their front lawn. Furniture, appliances, walls, windows, and doors, all strewn across their lawns.
Please remember them in your prayers. It is unfathomable that when disaster stikes ANYWHERE else in the World, we are there within hours to help, but in the NY and NJ area, there are still hundreds of thousands of people displaced, without food, shelter, clean water, or electricity.
