Biggie, did your "straight up the front leg" put you in the shoulder bones?  Should we be thinking at least slightly quartering away and avoid broad side?

The shoulders on those critters are shaped different. They angle forward from the top of the leg then back higher up. Resulting in a pocket of opportunity for an arrow.

Beleive me, I had a hard time shooting there until I saw a critter on the ground.

Best bet is to get some anatomy books and check 'em out.

The bone structure isn't really different, but the organ location is. If you look at the reassembled skeleton of a whitetail or a black bear or such, the upper leg bones go sharply forward at about a 45 degree angle on a standing broadside animal. If you hit the shoulder bone the shot was way to high to hit anything good, unless you are shooting downhill, like from a treestand.
