Air Travel Cost to South Africa

I am not a world traveler and of couse do not have the skymiles to qualify for a flight. My agent just today let me know that my flights to Kuduland will cost appx 2500$ per person next July. Delta from ST. Louis to ATL to Jo-burg, includes one night hotel and the connection to Polokwane the next day at noon.
Does this sound close? Money is money well spent for this kind of a trip. I just don't want to get hosed unless I get kissed as well... LOL

John,
That seems a little steep. I just flew roundtrip in September from Seattle, Washington to Johannesburg for $1,666 with South Africa Air. I booked with

John, We payed 2,375 to Polokwane from Seattle through Gracey this past July. You can try to find some better prices since you have some time. I would book a flight by December though. The cheaper the airfair the more animals you can shoot. Good luck.

John,
When you are comparing prices be careful, some of the low prices are for standby tickets. Believe me, you do not want to fly standby. The flights I took were full and they had 30 people hoing to get on standby or from other cancelled flights.

Everyone thanks for the input.. No standby, with NO connections thru Europe cost 2200$. I checked with 3 agents and they were all within $150. I guess the fuel costs have increased. No matter, I can't swim so I will pay the $2200.
I appreciate the advice.

John,
I flew Atlanta to Jo-berg to Polokwane in June of this year for $1614 but my travel agent, who specializes in South African travel, told me it was going to increase. South African Airways stopped flying from Atlanta in July and Delta isn't picking up the route until December. South African now goes from DC and New York only to SA.

On Orbitz and Travelocity, the last rates I looked at about a week ago, started around $1800.00 for travel from Orlando FL, to Jo'burg in January, and in June, the price was around $1500.00 for the same trip.
Cheers!

one other thing you can do is to buy your ticket directly from the air line. you can go on there site and book a flight for the same as most of the travel agencies will charge as well as the internet cheap tickets.
when i checked yesterday the flight from Dulles (D.C.) to Joberg was $1300. of course the time of year you fly will have some bearing on the price.
fyi. i just checked SAA's price for next July and the flights were $1600. from Dulles to Joberg.
this is SAA's web site. i booked directly with them last year and they mailed my tickets right to the house.
