SilverFlame broadheads for Africa
« on: February 11, 2009, 10:02:00 AM »
Hi!
Planning for a trip to Africa this summer and thinking of using SilverFlame 125 grain broadhead on carbon arrows. I`m shooting a 50@28 longbow.
Anybody who have an experience with this or some other recommandations for this hunt?
(Hunting for Impala, Kudu etc.)

Any quality solid, sharp 2 blade with tanto tip would do fine.  I shot 40 year old razorheads and had no problems.  Make sure that bow and arrow are tuned perfectly and shoot a heavy arrow and you will have a blast.  Bhill

Excellent choice.

We shot 3 blade Razorcaps but were using 65# bows and 750 grain arrows. AS sharp as the SF's are, you should have excellent results.

Good Luck!

Ordered some Beman carbon arrows and weight tubes, so i`m going for tuning and testing. Planning for heavy, perfectly tuned arrows

I shot the 210 SF on Beman MFX 400's from my 57# recurve. Took a Hartebeest and and Gemsbok with that setup.
My wife used 100 grain SF's on her bow set up which was a compound. She took a Kudu and I really credit the SF with doing it's job from her lightwieght setup. She got great penetration and a heart shot. The bull died in 100 yards.
I wasn't too pleased with weight tubes in tuning my setup and ended up going without them.
I've since switched to AD trad heavies with either brass insert and heavy, built up glue on heads and steel inserts or the standard inserts and the 300 Extreme or a built up El Grande 190 to about 315 or so. My final arrow weight is about 650 with either setup.
Build yourself a mock blind a practice shooting out of that if you're going to shooting out of blinds in Africa. You'll be shooting from inside a dark blind out to a sunlit target.

Since my first trip where I took a kudu, impala and a piggy, I have switched from 35-55 GT with 250 upfront cut to 29 inches ( weight of 500 with hunters and 540 with trad gt) to 55-75 gold tips cut to 30 inches and more weight upfront, 300 grains, to get the same same spine but with a higher arrow weight without weight tubes. (About 600 grains with 55-775 hunters)  I'm shooting 50 lbs at 28 and the heavier arrows fly just as well if not better with more penetration and a quieter bow.
I agree with BTH, I shot for months out of a 8 X 8 inch hole in a plywood board at targets arranged 10 to 18 yards away from the set up before going over.  The practice paid off and I probably would have been lost without that preparation.
Practice alot in your cold gear because the mornings can be cold.  I'm considering bring a dark colored wool blaket to wrap up in the blind so when the moment of truth comes, I can slip off the blanket and then shoot as versus wearing tons of clothes.  Just a thought.  You could never get away with that in a tree stand or stalking but the hides afford you alot more cover as long as you are quiet.  You will love it there. I'm going to SA in June for my first time and will be shooting GK's. I started using them about 9 months ago and they kill stuff dead. The 1 1/8" though have not left me great blood trails but everyone I have talked to, including 2 PH's say they are great heads for Africa. I've also been told that the trackers over there are incredible at their jobs.

I agree with Bisch in that the SF kills stuff dead. The trackers are also incredible and many of the PH's are using in dogs to trail animals, in addition to trackers. In the case of the tracking dog it's been my limited experience that if you hit the animal in the body cavity, between the legs and under the spine, the dog will be able to find it nearly all the time. The PH's at Melorani said they rarely, if ever, loose an animal hit in the body cavity. That said we shouldn't pull off a bad shot just because the dog will save the day....

Silver Flames are the muts... Get your arrow setup above 500 grains and shoot up the front leg and a third of the way up the body!     A good buddy of mine shot a nice Kudu bull with his 55# Widow a few years back. I'm a firm believer in shot placement, put any broadhead in the boiler-room and it will go down!   :archer:

We did some testing with SF and some others 3 blade cut on contact. The SF had a way better flight than the others. So i`m going for the SF 125 grains:)

I used silverflames on my hunt last year.  My PH said that he prefers the silverflames for performance and penetration.  They are an investment like anything else however at the end of the day, they are the business end of your bowhunting...
