broadhead selection for plains game
« on: February 16, 2013, 09:02:00 AM »
I am in the process of deciding which broadhead I will be using on my trip this summer. Right now I am thinking good old reliable magnus. But I like the looks of the VPA penetrators and the fact they are one picece. I also like the looks of the silver flames but am not in love with a vented head. Any thoughts?

I think Tuffheads are the best broadhead on the market right now.  That's what I used.  Lots of BH's will work but if/when I go back that's what I'll be using.

Check out Abowyer. They have a screw in model now that is a one piece.

If your looking for 150 grs then Go with the VPA screw in. You can take both the 2 blade and 3 blade with you, there is even a vented 2 blade as another option.

I like the 3 blade best, easy to sharpen and leaves a great blood trail. But you have the choice depending on the animal.

Also get some of the 150gr SGT small game heads for the Francolin and Guineafowl.

All the best hope you have a great trip.

125 GRAIN MAGNUS 2 BLADE HEADS WITH CEDAR SHAFTS WORKED JUST FINE ON EVERYTHING.  VERY SHARP AND SHOT PLACEMENT ARE THE KEY AND STOP WORRYING ABOUT THIS HEAD OR THAT HEAD.

IF YOU CAN SHOOT WITH GOOD FLIGHT AND HIT THE TARGET, THEN WORK ON YOUR ACCURACY AND FORGET THE TECHNICAL SPECS.

I have two different set ups for hunting. My main set in Africa was tipped with Abowyer Boneheads and Titanium inserts but it was a 175 grain total weight with 100 grain brass inserts (275 total up front)....  my back up bow was set up to use 150 grain silver flames. I never got to use the flames but the Abowyers were devastating.....  two wholes on everything with a 47@27 (marked 50@28) bow........

I think the flames would have been just as good from the back up set up as they have done very well here on game...........

Good luck    :)

Thanks for the advice guys. I think at this point my set up will be Easton axis trads with VPA 150 terminators. Should work.

I like both the Silver Flames and Tuff Heads use as heavy a broad head as possible!

JP actually impressed me immensely last year with those Tuff Heads and we have taken Giraffe in the past with the Silver Flames we had no problem with penetration with either of them.

Best Regards

Is there a difference with the silver flames. I know they were made by GK and ABS. Does GK still make them or are the only silver flames available from ABS?

There might be a better set up for your usage but I do not know what it would be...tough arrows and tough broadheads that complement each other nicely...my go to arrows these days are 175 and 200 grain Penetrators on Full Metal Jackets

I set out a while ago to reduce my herd of 40 bows...And I am finally down to 42

I was just in SA in November 2012. Shot Kudu and Wildebeest with my recurve. I used screw-in  Classic Magnus 2 blade vented 100 grain. They worked flawlessly!

Just make sure you keep them sharp.

Good Luck !!!

Zwickeys. They have killed everything from cape buffalo on a 2317 XX78 to small antelope from recurves.
