1966 Kodiak 64" 63#@28" BowDoc refinished it. Mike made the string.

My own 1966 is a 64 inch model, scales 51 and is probley one of the better shooters I have...But unlike most 66's...one day while stairing at one of Fred's personal bows at the Pope & Young Mus.I came home and cut the shelf way down on my 1966.Great shooting bow. Those 1966 Kodiaks came in both African Rosewood and in Golden Rosewood. Both modles look great, but by far the figured bubinga models are rarer and the nicest looking.Ya gotta love em huh?????????? bd

So I am blessed with a bow that is rare in three different way. Figured bubinga, over 60# of draw weight and already low cut shelf for arrow just over the hand. Still waiting on the string to stretch. I think it may be one of the few Bears that is heavier than it's stated draw weight. I'm going to put it on a scale as soon as it's ready to shoot. I did put two arrows through it just as part of the string stretching process. Man is it fast! Right now brace height is 7 7/8" inches.I think the string is almost where it will be. Then add some Bow Hush and Hush Puppies and she'll be ready to tune.

C2,

You think it rare for a Bear bow to be heavier than marked?  My experience has been just the opposite with most Bears I have owned were 2-3 pounds over the stated weight  Hmmmm...

What about this BowDoc?

If serial # starts with a "5", then 1965...and it does look like a '65 model.

I have a 60" in 48# that is a great shooter...and it looks handsome as well.

Serial # starts with 6S meaning in sixties Bearese made in '66 and 64" long. 6L would be 60".
'66 was the last year they made the Kodiak. After '66 it went to the Super Kodiak and the Kodiak Hunter.
By heavier than marked 2-3 pounds could be a worn spring on a scale. I think this bow may well be 5 pounds or more over marked. Not sure it could be that I'm just out of shape from lack of shooting the last few weeks.

thats not an s that is a 5  . It should start with 65 or 66 if it looks like a 6 s it is a 65. God Bless Steve,  The 65 is worth more anyway.

Oh ya,Blackhawk is dead nuts on that one.About 80% at least I've scaled were over by about 2 pounds normaly.Bob told me Bear rep's liked them that way. Also it made the Bear bows seem faster then some others of the same era.(of course heavier draw weight then marked may have helped)..bd

Thats a 1966 in the pic's,dark brown fiberglass both back and belly.Damn it,if I can ever crack the picture loading code I would load a pic of a 1965 and 1966 together..that will help ya'all ID them. The 1965 would start with a 5 and have dark green fiberglass both back and belly and did not come in 64 inches..only 60 inch in 65.The 1966 would start with a 6.... dark brown both sides thats 6S S =64" most likely, cause my hand writeing looks like some shakie old mans...but I ai'nt!!! bowdoc

Yep, my 65 has the green glass on back and belly. That second pic looked like green glass, but I see the brown glass in the first pic.  Good info on the 64" not available in 1965. Thanks BD!
