Checks and Balances-A bow build
« on: December 31, 2004, 01:15:00 PM »
I am a bow-a-holic.I admit it and I'm fine with it.  :knothead:

As you could tell from my last post,I have started on another bow. This stave of osage has some character. It also has quite a few wind checks, hence the name.

Here is the stave taken down to a single ring.

Here is the profile before thinning.

I am now at the stage of having the stave pretty much layed out and thinning to floor tiller.

It is roughly 1 3/8ths wide at the widest down to 1/2" at the tips. 69 1/2"tip to tip.

Thanks Mac! In the process a doing some heat bending to get string alignment.I figure I better get that taken care of before any more long string tillering.  :wavey:

Yah yah yah,you'll get pics.LOL.

One limb has a slight reflex to it and the other has a slight deflex and a little twist.I may not even try to correct them. The reflexed limb is bending pretty good,a bit stiff at the fade but still pretty good none the less.I'll take some pics in a few hours after the wood has had time to cool.

Happy New Year everyone.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the kind words.

Dano, I've been working on this one for about a week.I spent an hour the first day chasing the ring for the back. The rest was a little here and there till yesterday which was about 5 hours.

Sparky,This is a mean piece of osage. It's coming close to giving me fits.  :knothead:

Chad, like Dano said before "This isn't a foot race".You have to remember,I'm not working the kind of hours you are and deer hunting is over.So ya see I have plenty of time (kind of).

Today was a day of rest from the snakey stave.Did some knapping and then some napping.  "[moon]"

May file in some string grooves, make up a string tonight and get back to it tomorrow.

Thanks MPS and KT,they are fun and challenging to make. Eack has it's own pequliarities to deal with.
