Playtime for the Masochistic-semi-sorta build-a-long
« on: January 15, 2006, 01:44:00 PM »
How do you all like this for a side profile? Natural reflex at the handle to one limb and the reflex at the tip.The opposite limb has less reflex at the handle and has deflex at the outer 1/3 of the limb.

Heat bending to take out a 45deg.twist on the tip.

This stave has issues. plenty of knots, pins and windchecks.Even a little ring separation.

Back of the bow stave.

Profile close to floor tiller.

Adding reflex to handle to match opposite side.

Adding deflex to equal opposite limb.

Not sure if it will work but I am also going to try recurving the tips a little. At present the length is 64" tip to tip.1"x4" handle with 1 1/2" fades and roughly 1 3/8 at the fades down to 1/2" at the tips.Profile will kinda look like a gullwing.(?)

This really isn't a build-a-long cause I don't know how much time I'll have to work on it.Let alone know what I'm going to do till I do it.  "[tunglaff]"  Guess you could say "I'm winging it"

To give a little run down. This here is an osage stave that I got from Carcajou 3 or 4 years ago.It has had plenty of time to season.I went down roughly 8 rings to get to what is now the back.

I'm currently doing some heat tweeking to get the string to run down the center of the handle.I probably won't get to work on floor tillering till next weekend.

No Chad,it's not from you.    :knothead:    But ya never know.I seem to think outside the norm.Everybody else is thinking of deflex off the handle so I do reflex. They think reflex the limbs,I deflex. How's that for pissing outside the bowl?    :bigsmyl:    Speaking of learning curve.LOL.A piece like this one you can try out all kinds of ideas and see what works and what don't.The sky is the limit.

I had a few trains of thought with this one.The deflexed outer limbs would reduce stress at brace and ease stringing the bow.The reflex off the handle would possibly aid in storing power in the limbs and give a decent force draw curve.I may be totally off base but you don't learn much by sticking to the tried and true.Besides what do I have to lose?Still learn something,no matter what.

Ken, If I have it finished I will bring it.But I wouldn't count on it.   :banghead:   It has a lot of issues and would surprise me if it survives.

What Dano said!

wow, Linc, I'm glad the "M-Word" has finally been used, and even more so that I'm not the one that used it first! I'm not saying you LIKE to work on this kind of stave, but you sure do have a way of drawing a darn good bow out of them.

I'll be watching this one intently, too.

Tim,I must be a masochist, cuz I like working on this kinda stuff.I just try to get the best bow I can out of the wood that I have.I have other wood that is waiting in the wings but it will have to wait it's turn. I have osage from Scifres,Hackbow and Chad Jones.Yew billets from Terry Riley.Hickory from you and Carcajou.Ironwood from Walkingstick.Bamboo and an osage slat from MOJAM 2004.Couple of vine maple staves from ebay. All this wood and there is only one of me.(Thank God)

Linc, Like I told you the other day you'd figure it out. It's beginning to look like a bow!   :scared:

But with that pile of primo staves under all those twisted bent up ones. I figure you're saving those until they're well seasoned   :readit:

Lee, a pipe wrench is cool, course Linc couda used a scrap of leather to protect the wood. I use an old monkey wrench in pretty much the same manner  :bigsmyl:

Lee,Sorry.I forgot to tell you about the pipe wrench.Ya know I got oldtimers desease! No tellin how many other bowyering tools I furgot to tell you about.   :knothead:

Here are a few updated pics. The deflex really doesn't show much but I ended up with 3" of reflex.(Would have been 4" without the deflex).
