Tri-Lam Update (FINISHED PICS and SPECS) Pg. 5
« on: February 12, 2006, 12:01:00 AM »
Well after picking a few of your collective brains, I decided to try my first Tri-Lam bow.  I went with Raw Bamboo Back, Bamboo Flooring Belly slat of .25", and the cream in the middle of the Oreo is a .20" slat of Purpleheart.  I just glued it up an hour ago. She will be 62-63" NTN and is glued up in a R/D Profile.  It also has asymetrical limbs.  I glued it up on a board form like Dean shows in his video.  I have the Center on a 2.75" post, Midlimbs on a 2" post, and Tips on a 6" post. If she turns out to be a shooter and make weight, I will be escorting her Black Bear hunting in a couple of months.  I am not doing a build along, but I will keep you posted as to how she turns out along the way.  I learned a few things so far I thought I would pass along:

1.  Mix up more glue than you think you will need.  There are 4 glueing surfaces as opposed to two on a regular BB Bow.  I learned to mix real fast.  Don't ask how many times I mixed glue!!!!        :scared:          BTW, I need to build a plane body for my toothing plane blade; my arms and hands are worn out from prepping 4 surfaces while holding the blade by hand.        :help:

Thanks,

Brian

Looking forward to your progress & the finished product Brian.
Now go to bed.  Tomorrow's a big day!  I'll be praying for you in the morning.

Well she is off the form and looking good.  Well actually she looks ugly, but that is to be expected with all the Urac boogers on her.  I hope to get a riser section glued on today and try to cut her to shape tomorrow or teusday.  Resting her on a flat surface, she has .75" of a gap between the center point of the grip belly and the flat surface.  She is touching the surface at mid limb, and the belly of the limb tips are 4.25" off of the flat surface.  If she tillers out well, and if she holds together, she ought ot be a Smoking fast early draw weight honey.  I want to cut her out to profile NOW, and clean up the boogers, but I need to have patience.

Any sugestions for riser material?  I was thinking of going with Purpleheart to match the limb core, but I might go with a few differnt laminations.

So far so good!!!

That is why I destroyed that perfectly good slat of Bulletwood.  I learned I have to do more thinner laminations to get that much bend.

I think she will tiller and shoot out with the tips about 2-2.5" in front of the center of the riser.  I sure hope she makes weight!!!  I don't want to be labled a "LUKE"!  LOL!!!

How are you buddy?

This is my first Bow since moving north.  I was just out cutting out the profile past where the riser will be glued on.  I also cleaned up all the boogers and am getting ready to cut and sand the riser piece for glueup.  I hope to have it clamped before church.  If not, I guess I will have do it before I get to bed tonight.  I want to sart tillering by tomorrow night!!!!!  It is P R E T T Y!!!!  It might explode, so I better take pics of it before I tiller, er, I mean destroy it.

"It also has asymetrical limbs"

Hi Brian,  Does the above comment refer to the upper limb being longer than the bottom?

Hope she turns out.  I've yet to try the RD design...have tried the tri-lam in Reflex and it came out nice.  Lots of fun.  Hope the rest goes smoothly for you.  Swanny

Make that it did have Asymetrical limbs!!!!  Yes that is what it meant, but somehow some bonehead forgot to put the end post out far enough on on that end, so I cut 1 inch off the top and have symetrical limbs now and even tip lift or reflex.

Good to hear from you Ken.  Are you all still out west?  If you get up here again stop by and say hi.

"Are you all still out west? If you get up here again stop by and say hi."

Did get out West this past summer and fall...the Lord had other ideas... Lyme loves high altitude (low pressure/low oxy levels) so my immune system crashed....had to come back to the East after three months to recover.  Now living part of my life in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber I built with good results.

Am thinking about getting up to your neck of the woods sometime when the cash flow recovers, DV.  Miss my friends dearly.  Will stop by if I do.

Post some pics of your project if you can.

I still haven't got the riser cut and prepped for glue up.  I will get it done tonight.

I will take the hint and get a few pics as well.

I finally got the riser pieces prepared and have them clamped to the bow right now.  I hope to cut it to shape tomorrow and get a string on it.  I used a piece of Cherry next to the Bamboo Flooring belly, and a Piece of Purpleheart on the belly of the Cherry.

I promise pictures by tomorrow night!!!!!

Patience my friend!!!!  After your deer season this year, I would have thought you would have learned that virtue.  LOL!!

PICS COMING TOMORROW.  Tomorrow is the day after today.  Don't be emailing me at 12:01AM asking where they are either.

Say hi to my old friend for me will you?

Little Fred,

I fianlly got your package in the mail today.  Sorry about the delay.  I have her cooking suspended over a Kerosene heater in the garage.  I want to take the clamps off and clean her up, but I better wait until tomorrow.  Hows the Osage?

no problem with the delay. No rush.

Haven't had much time to work on the osage lately, I was just at a 3 day winter camp. Hopefully when things calm down a bit I'll be back at work.
