It should look like this at this stage

Now back over to the belly side and rounding and blending using the flexible rasp.

The idea here is to have a smooth transition from the rectangular limb profile to a round tip profile

Now it's time to finish the nocks on the belly side.  Extend the side cuts that you just did to the belly.  Watch the angle so that it stays consistant.

It's pretty easy if you take your time and look at your work as you go

Now back over and lets blend the overlay into the limb.  This can be a stressful operation, Just remember glass is pretty hard stuff but don't cut into the glass on the back of the bow.  So with the round file SLOWLY work the overlay down to the back.  We like a concave here so that your thumb slides easily up it when stringing.

The finished tip should look like this and be ready for sanding and finish.

Crash did the tip to match and a very nice job on both of them.  He has 2 1/2 hours into completing the bow so far.  He is going to try and come over next week to do the sanding and finishing.  We might even let him use our spray outfit.  LOL

Mike, what are you folks using for the final sand out and spray finish?

We use a palm sander, with 60, 150, 220 grit and a detail sprayer with Thunderbird finish.

I don't know if Crash is going to do the finish that way.  He was talking about using Varathane.

Any more work done on this?  Can't wait to start my own.

Nothing yet, Crash was busy this weekend.  Might have to do the sanding and finishing steps without him and use a different bow.  I'll get ahold of him and find out today.

I hear Crash is coming over on Wednesday to finish his bow.  So we'll take pics then and document the sanding and finishing.  This is also in our chapter in TBB4 that is hitting the stands any day now.

We didn't get the sanding documented. But here goes a quick overview.

Sand the riser, sides of the limbs and tips with 60 to remove any tool marks, 10 strokes up and down each limb edge, followed by 5 strokes on the limb corners changing angles on each stroke to round the corner.

Change to 150 grit and remove all the sanding marks left by the 60 grit and any tool marks you missed.

After that's done and a careful inspection for unwanted marks, it's time for sealing. The  Seal your riser only. Let it set overnight and reapply to the riser. Let set for 24 hours.

Now put 220 on the palm sander and do the the entire bow, glass included. Smooth it all out and apply 2-3 coats for final.

Hope this helps!

To the top for all those who may have missed this. And with the newest bow blanks coming out, I am sure there are more interested in what all is needed to complete one of these fine bows.
