Longbow purchase
« on: January 01, 2008, 08:21:00 AM »
I am seriously considering the purchase of a used Bear Byron Ferguson Patriot longbow. I would appreciate any pros and cons that anyone might offer on this model of bow. Thanks.

I have had one for several years.  A highly overlooked bow IMO, I consider mine one of my top 3 shooters.  I wouldn't pay what they want for a new one, but if you got a decent deal on a used one I doubt you'd regret buying it.

The only cons are some of them have rough string grooves that may need to be polished or they'll be rough on your string (mine doesn't but others apparently have had this problem) and they are overpriced new.  Other than that I can't say enough good things about the Patriot, it is a much better bow than the Montana, which is a deservedly popular good shooting bow also.

The shelf on the Patriot is not cut as deep as some high performance longbows so you'll not need as much arrow spine to tune well.

If you buy it put a good Flemish D-97 string on it and brace it low, it will shoot like a dream, fast and quiet.

Thank you, sir. I appreciate the information. I think maybe I'll but the used one I have my eye on.
