Canon compact digital camera
« on: December 05, 2007, 10:36:00 AM »
I'm still looking for a compact digital to carry in my backpack while in the woods.  I've been considering either the Canon S5 IS or the Canon SX100 IS.  I like the fact that the SX100 IS has a lens cover that closes when the camera is turned off rather than a "snap-on" type lens cover as is the case with the S5 IS.  Anyone have any input between these two models?  I played with the SX100 IS in a retail store the other night and was impressed with it.  The only unknown is how it will do in low light conditions.

Eagle, I am in the same boat. I am moving from a DSLR to a compact so I can cary a camera more on outings.

I was at circut city and best buy the other day playing with the S5 IS and the canon D9

that D9 is  sweet camera...has lots of very cool features and has a built in lens cover and 12.1 MP. might take a look at that one....

I have been reading on the S5IS and only two negatives keep coming up often. One is the lens cap is poorly desinged, but can be rectified with a lens filter adapter then purchasing another cap. the other is noisy operation in low light conditions. Some of the pro's reviews however are disapointed in the lens since it didn't change from S3 IS.
have a look at this review....although I never base a purchase on a internet review this one is pretty good.

I still think I am probably going to go with the S5 IS though...even though it is a little larger then the D9...the D9 price tag is a hair out of reach for me right now.

Jeff, I think you might have meant the G9 rather than D9.  My dad bought a G9 about 3 weeks ago and it is a sweet camera.  I'm in the same boat however and the G9 is a little out of my budget.  I'm also not sure I want drag a camera that nice around in the field.  I must confess, I tend to be pretty hard on my gear.  Have you looked at the "new" SX100 IS.  I played with one the other day in a retail store and was impressed with the 10X (optical) zoom and the image stabilization.  I would like to have a better idea of how well it will do in low light.

No I haven't looked at it yet, but I have the day off tomorrow and might go do a little shopping....I sure wish they would let you take the cameras outside or/and hook them up to a laptop to see the pic quality. I can barely make out if the pic is decent in the lcd screens.

and yeah I meant G9...

Jeff,

I have the S5IS and love it.  It's a great camera.  I'm happy with the picture quality, but more than likely I will buy a the Powershot A710 IS (in addition) for hunting.  It's smaller and won't take a bunch of room in my pack.

Jerry Gowins did an article in TBM that stated that the 710 did magazine quality pics, he was not sure if it would do covers...He was gonna find out though.

If you're a member of Costco, check out Costco.com.  You can get the S5 with a 2 gig card for $369.00 which is a pretty good deal.

Go to dpreviews.com and compare the cameras you're interested in...

I hope this helps.

Happy hunting,
Jason

I was looking at the G9, then came across the Powershot 950IS.  The 950 is a lot smaller and looks to be the same camera less the manual modes and add on flash shoe.  It only has a 3.7 zoom vs the G9's 6x.

It is about $100 less than the G9.

Canon makes some great cameras, but have you considered the Panasonic Lumix line? I have two of them, as well as a compact Canon, and the quality of the Lumix lenses (Leicas) are really good. They are comparable in price to the Canons, and have similar features. I carry a small Lumix, the DMC-T23 in my pocket when hunting or just hanging out. It is very compact and takes great pictures. What it doesn't have is manual override, but for a point and shoot, it is pretty slick.

I own a powershot S3. I love it. It takes great quality pics. It is a little bigger than the 710IS but I hunt with a frame pack so it is not a big deal to me. If space were an issue I would go with the 710.

Local store had the Canon PowerShot 720IS but not the 710IS. 720IS is 8MP. The 710IS is 7.1 MP. Both have 6x optical zoom. Has anyone compared the 720IS with the 710IS?

Found a review after posting the above. Appears to be very little difference in the Canon 710IS and the 720IS. Primary difference being the 7 vs 8MP. Can buy the 720 for $240. Have not found a 710IS locally. Any suggestions?

I bought the 720 IS based on Jerry's advise. I've been very happy with it. I think the 710 is discontinued. I looked at both at Circuit City one evening, went home to email Jerry, and when i returned then next morning , they had pulled the 710 of the shelf.

The 710 has been discontinued. They replaced it with the 720. I just purchased a new Canon 720. Should have it by the end of this week. Can't wait.
