Recording quality audio

Do any of you record sound effects seperatly from your video (bird songs, water running, fire crackling, etc.)?  I've been doing a little research on different setups and was seeing if anyone had any advice.

I do.  a good friend of mine that was in the bizz for many years told me to always record ambient noise. so now i will let the camera run for about 3-5 minutes to just record the sounds of nature. this can be used in many ways later down the road for fill.
