resize pictures

I resized pictures and were not nearly as clear as the original. The camera I used was a canon powershot SD 300 4MP. would a higher MP camera be better for resizing.

when you say resize what exactly are you referring to?  are you trying to change the resolution for viewing on the web or are you actually cropping the pictures smaller?  You have several things to look at when resizing for the internet.  First the resolution, which will affect the speed at which the image loads as well as the clarity. Next is the images pixel dimensions. What program are you using to resize the images?  

for example I use a resolution setting of 72 for the internet and the pixel dimensions of around 600 px on the long side.  Some programs such as photoshop give you a quality adjustment as well.  if you lower this to much your images will become a little blurry.

images that you intend to have prints made from you should leave the resolution at 300 dpi or greater and the quality setting at 100. Prints can be made from the lower resolution files, but anything much larger than a 4x6 will start to show pixelation (grain in film).

When I up load to photo bucket and resize  to 640 wide, the photo is not quite as clear as the original. I also used my computer to resize before uploading with the same result. There may be features in the program that I am not using or aware of. >>> RAY

Ray what you are doing with the resize is changing the pixel dimension down to 640px wide from original image which is probably at least double that. something else is happening i'm sure, because just changing the dimensions should not affect the clarity. I don't use photo bucket so I'm not exactly sure what is taking place when you upload.

lets start from the beginning.  look in the menu settings of your camera and tell me what picture quality setting you are shooting with and the exact pixel dimensions of the native image as you capture it in your camera.
