Catalpa any count for bows?
« on: February 01, 2007, 10:51:00 AM »
I have a buddy getting ready to cut down a catalpa tree in his yard.  I think I can get a few good staves from it if it's worth anything.  If not it'll be firewood.  Any help?  Thanks.

Don't know about bows, but it makes great carving wood.

My guess would be no.  I remember catalpa being a very pulpy wood.  Most folks cut 'em down because they have a bad habit of losing large branches to wind.

Thanks guys.  I may hang on to a piece to experiment with anyway.  Hey, it's free!
