Does this sound about right? Shrew + Crono
« on: January 08, 2008, 02:49:00 PM »
I shot my SuperShrew through the crono today for the first time. This is my set up. 58" 58lb @ 28 Used a Gold tip 3555 that weighs 525 grains. My draw is pretty close to 28. I shot the first 5 arrows 168, 168, 171, 173, 174. Does this sound about right? I am thinking this set up should blow through some whitetails this fall.

Yeah I shot mine through a crono with a 10 gr/# arrow and it was shooting low to mid 160's.  Sounds like your right is the ball park!!

Sounds about right.  Mine is 55@29 and is right at 180-184.

Sounds slow to me, compared to many other r/d longbows I've graphed recently, including Slewboy, Black Widow, Thunderhorn, and Lightning, all of which consistently graph average 180 with 525, which by the way is 125 too light, according to Dr. Ashby's research, for really big game. I have a Shrew on order and sure had hoped for at least the average these days. Not a speed-freak at all, but just really surprised. But then, that's still 10-20fps faster than any of the several dozen bows I've built myself so far. These days I graph all bows at 650, which is Ashby's min (with all else being correct as well) for sure bone-busting on elk/moose sized game,w hich is all I hunt. Could some of you guys go back and graph your Shrews at this weight? Much appreciated, Dave

Slayer, are you snap shooting or do you draw, anchor and release? A 6 pound variance suggest that you're not getting a consistence draw length and the speed your getting is low for your setup.

Ron I usually draw and anchor. A consistent draw is definitely something I need to work on. Also, I think I am not quiet drawing 28, probably closer to 27. Ron, what speeds would you normally see from this set up?

Yeah, that's seems a bit low...but also sound like it might be your release.  That is a pretty big spread of numbers there.....but I think you got plenty of UMPH!!!

Speed is a good thing. But quiet is better. What type of string and silencers ya got on her?<><

I made them from wool yarn. They are just a bit bigger than what you can buy. Personally I don't really care about the speed much, I am more concerned that arrow goes where I am looking and that the bow is quiet.
