Arm slap...ok, but Nose slap???? Update
« on: January 10, 2008, 05:18:00 PM »
I've developed a terrible flaw in my form.  I know what it is and the reason for it, but I'm having a really hard time curing it.  I need to turn my head to look at the target directly instead of "side looking" at it.  Here's the thing though, If I had signed up for the on-line tourney I'd be shooting in the mid to high 50's.  When I consciencely turn my head to look straight my groups spread out.

Any suggestions?

Have you ever done this? Boy, do I feel ridiculous.

used to do it had my nose just like yours, just turn your head slightly will make all the difference in the world and after your brain gets used to the different sight picture your groups will tighten back up. It took about 3-4 days shooting everyday to retrain my brain. Sure does hurt after awhile doesnt it...

I found that if I turn towards the target ( Terry's clock) it helps with get lined up better and no slap :0)

Yes, I did, but never in such a colourful way. My problem was canting my head more than the bow... ouch! Eliminated itself after changing from glove to tab.

Yes but apparently not enough. :biglaugh:

I had this problem a while back and it was a combination of turning my head too much and tilting my head too much. I am not sure how or what made me start doing it but boy it will really make you string shy.

Are you starting flinch now when you release?

I went through the same thing last spring. I really don't know where it started, but man did it ever get frustrating! I finally worked it out by concentrating on not tilting my head into the string, but bringing the string to my face.

Good news is that it WILL go away, stay with it.

No, that's why my groups are staying tight.  I'm trying to really pay attention to form and square to the target and it's better, but then a few shots and... ouch   :scared:

No sir. But I have anchored and released the string, and it ripped out some of my mustache.

Now I lean my head over sideways, and anchor further back past my mouth.

did jump around there for a little bit when it happened.

I tend to chap the nation out of the corner of my mouth when I shoot alot.  Recently for hunting I started wearing a camo bandanna from my eyes down.   Not only does it make me feel sneakier, but it protects my face from my string.

What the heck - you might want to give it a try and see what you think.

That's really good advice.

I was looking for something more, like this from another forum/message board.

 VA -

You know what the problem is with the nose, the question that remains is why do your groups open up when you face the target?

We can't see you from here and you can't see youself from where you are either, so these are just generalities.

For most people, turning their heads away from the target lengthens their draw; conversely, turning it towards the target shortens their draw. The first thing to consider is that shortening the draw is messing up your shoulder alignment, meaning your drawing arm is no longer in line with the arrow at anchor. IF that's the case, then you'll have to figure out how to maintain alignment while looking squarely at the target. Drawing in front of a morror, videp taping or a coach/friend watching would be in order.

The other option is that with your head square to the target, the arrow may no longer be under your eye and that may be messing with your aim.

Could be a lot of things, including bad carma, but like I said, hard to tell from here.

Viper1 out.

I am laughing out loud right now! I look JUST like you! I have the "road rash" on my nose too!!!!!  I find that if I think about anchoring the tip of the fletching to the tip of my nose I am ok.   I had thought I was the only weird one out there! Not really weird...just...well, different!  lololol I even went to putting a band aid on it when I shot! But I felt like Michael Jackson with one glove! Not right! Couldn't find a camo band aid!

Well, sorta. But I don't get a cute li'l nose job, I get a cool scuff on my cheek that looks like I just escaped a date with Mike Tyson.

I think I turn my head to the right and into the string to get the arrow under my right eye more, instead of to the right of it. I am left eye dominant, but not severely, and can switch when I think about it. But turning my head also gets both of the eyes closer to being on the same plane, closer to the arrow.

I am paying more attention to it, and refiguring my anchor. After 43 years, the struggle continues. God forbid that I should get lessons. Then what would I do?

Well, you've taken enough harrassment for this...so it's time to spread it around....me too, brother! Oh, sorry for the close up. It's hard to take a pic of yourself.
