RER Finish-Flat, Satin, or Semi Gloss
« on: January 10, 2008, 09:09:00 PM »
Kevin is about to start building my RER takedown recurve. Any thoughts on the finish? Are there really any pros or cons to using satin or semi-gloss?

Thanks

Depends in my opinion on what you are going to use the bow for.  If your main purpose is for hunting then go with a flat finish so that no glare off your bow will spook game that is in close.

The gloss will be a harder more durable finish and if it is too shiny for you then all you have to do is buff it lightly with oooo steel wool. Can also hand rub the shine back in with cheese cloth or such if desired.

Satin, it looks nice and ya can hunt with it. Great bows and they smoke. Shawn

Like Shawn I prefer the satin finish. Dull enough to hunt with and still look like great at the 3D shoots.

My RER Arroyo has a flat finish which is almost a shame since the bow oozes quality . It is a very understated bow and I get plenty of people stop me at 3 D shoots to admire the bow . Wide flat surfaces still reflect regardless of how dull the coating and I use bow socks in the bush . regards Jacko

Prefer flat for hunting but satin works also. have one of each on my Vortex's.

GameGetter is correct. The glossier, the more durable. (unless we're talking some kind of epoxy)If semi-gloss is the toughest he offers, I'd go with that, and rub it out a little.

I recently posted a thread on Bowyer's Journal where I described buffing a gloss finish with a felt pad. Does basically the same thing as the 0000 steel wool, except it feels smoother.
