My buddy Leonard's Dec doe.
« on: January 10, 2008, 09:33:00 PM »
Here's a pic of my buddy Leonard Settlemyer and his doe killed on Dec 15 here in IN.  Leonard is one of those guys who could have fun getting his leg broken...real good hunting partner and a real nice guy.  I've never heard him complain about anything-and we've been through a few "adventures" together.  He has only very limited access around his home to hunting land so has been coming down and hunting with me when he can get away on the weekends for a couple of years.  We've had some trying times getting him set up on a deer....things always seem to go wrong on my "guaranteed (yeah, right!) plans".  From cruddy weather to bad winds to other hunters and on and on he's been a patient guy with my fumbling....but I finally got him on a good setup this late season.  I found a good trail to a cut cornfield and hung a stand and he shot this doe out of a group of 4 skilletheads during the beginning of the blizzard we had that weekend.  A 49 lb Shrew longbow, 1916 arrow and a Magnus stinger 4-blade severed the spine between the shoulders at 20 yards and gave him this deer-during late gun season, no less.  If you see Leonard around (like at K-Zoo) give him your congrats!

Ryan

Congrats to Leonard on the doe and congrats to Ryan on finding the right kind of hunting partner. I had to laugh at your description Ryan:
" Leonard is one of those guys who could have fun getting his leg broken". I definitely have a hunting buddy that fits that description. My buddy Leon has fun wherever we are at and whatever happens. On the 1st day of a week long elk hunt a couple years ago Leon was thrown from a horse breaking several ribs. Despite encouragement from the rest of us to pack it in and get medical attention Leon stayed on the mountain the whole time even though he couldn't even pull his bow back. Despite the pain and limitations Leon managed to have a good time around camp --- although it didn't hurt that he had a jug of liquid pain reliever and the company of a very cute camp cook/ wrangler. We later accused him of faking the broken ribs so he could hang out back in camp with Jeannie!
To me, the ultimate challenge in bowhunting is not how far away you can succesfully make a killing shot but rather how close you can get to the animal before shooting.
