Yep, ask the bowyer. He knows his design and can work it towards your concerns.Smoothness of draw, performance, etc.

That said,I think Howard had a general guideline that the last # in your draw should match your bow lengths last #. I have a 26.5" draw and my 2 favorite bows are 66" and 67",so it works for me.  :D

Just read all the other responses. Mike had the formula I was thinking about right. I forgot the +60"

One more thing. I honestly don't think I'm good enough of a shot that I really notice much difference in adding an inch or two to each end of a bow.

I'm not an expert. But wouldn't the way the bowyer tillered the bow make a bigger difference, than the length, except at extremes?

At my short draw,I think I'd have to go to a pretty short (62" or shorter???) bow to notice much difference in a Hill bow. I could see losing a little Performance going to the other extreme too,say a 72" bow.
One of my bows is 64" and I think it's a real sweet shooter. It's marked 56#@27" How much difference would there be in how the limbs work or are tillered if it were 56#@23" or 56#@32"?

My 69" Schulz is customized by Nate Steen for up to a 30 inch draw. I'm not a great shooter but I can tell the difference. So much nicer now!

Brian- what made you go with a lighter weight than what you normally shoot?  And...are those vanes on those arrows!?

Howard Hill recommended you take the last number in your draw length, convert it to the length of the bow, 28 inches =68 nch bow, 26 inch draw = 66 inch bow and so on...worked for me too, he must have know what he was talking about.......
Craig Ekins;

I had a great day out with my Half Breed today! Little bit of fresh snow on the ground and a bit of sun really made the woods come alive. 4 shots total (2 on grouse, 2 on rabbits) but no game taken unfortunately. I was after deer but couldn't resist when the small game started showing up. All my shot opportunities involved weird angles and shooting through tiny openings in the brush so it was great practice - sometimes I wonder if I'd have more fun if I stopped hunting whitetails and went after bunnies and birds exclusively.....

Rossco. Sounds like you had a wonderful day afield.

Pat. It's not really lighter than usual, maybe a pound or so. I typically shoot 55@28 and since I had it built for me I had James weight/tiller for 27" draw which is where Im consistently at.  And they are feathers.

Rossco: Sounds like you had a great time. We got a fresh skiff of snow last night, but I got tied down with "Honey Do's", so I couldn't take advantage of it. Gotta keep my wife happy...got the go ahead for another bow!

I'll probably get either a Shelton or a Misty Dawn. I was curious about how these two compared in the amount of string follow, so I snagged the photos off of the web and put them side by side (I hope the bowyers don't mind):

The Shelton is on the left. It looks like they both have a fair amount. It also looks like the profiles are a bit different. Has anyone had the opportunity to lay these two bows together for a real world comparison. I don't necessarily trust what I'm seeing in these photos.

Ak bowbender. I have one of each. A misty dawn and a shelton. The shelton is 2 pounds heavier. They have a very similar profile. Strung and unstrung.. shoot me a pm and maybe i can set up some pictures for ya

David Yukon

Ok I guess I don't have to worry if the 68" would work since the person who was interested in the trade, decided he couldn't part with any of his Hill style bows... I don't blame him... So I put the for sale sign up as well as for trade... I really want a Hill style bow!!

Brian,

I am expectiong some pics tomorrow evening of your new Vixen ... followed shortly by a post on performance and how it compares to other bows you have shot.

Not sure all what Nate did. I know he took some of the whip out of the ends, reduced weight some, checked the tiller, and retimed the limbs. I know some of the draw feel is the reduced weight, but I don't feel the same stack past 29 that I felt before. It doesn't stack at all!

Bob,
There will be a fully finalized after action report. LOL
