HH bug got me ... Part One!

What would you guys use to treat the leather on an old HH quiver. Something to protect and not damage...
I picked up a barely used older stitched model last year and its just been an arrow holder so far. Going to try and get it dialed in.

Is the leather dry? cracked? stiff?

Neatsfoot Oil compound will help restore needed oils and flexibility. I use Fiebing's Aussie conditioner as an occasional treatment.

I've got a quiver made by Dave Wallace and he recommended that I use virgin olive oil on the quiver and it does keep it soft and flexible and doesn't seem to stain clothing.  Hope you get that old quiver in top form.

Its not dry, looks like it might have been used a few times then stored for 30+ years. Probably never been treated or cleaned. The leather is flexible but really hasn't been broken in. I'll get a few pics up.

 

 

 

 

 

Any idea what this is? It was in the small pocket.

I would use "pure" Neatsfoot oil (Shep's is very good) I would avoid neatsfoot oil "compound"... which contains mineral oil).
Mix about 30% pure neatsfoot oil into any leather conditioner, such as Leather Balm. (shoemakers always carry it). A couple of times rubbed in,with that mixture,  will give the quiver, lots of life.
 Canola oil, straight, rubbed on is also real good.

Not too long ago I bought a FF string to replace the string that came with my 68" HHA longbow.  I measured the well used string while off the bow and it was 64-1/4".  So I ordered my new FF string that length.  Well the new FF string turned out a little short.  I could only get 6-7/8" BH out of it instead of the 6-3/8" BH I got with the stock, non-FF string.  Now I have a new Dave Johnson 66" longbow (came with  B-50 string) and want to order  FF string for it also.  What's the recommended way to measure w/o buying 2-4 strings until I figure it out?

I did ask the string maker and they are a little non-committal as I can tell they have been burned too many times.  I am not going to say who it is but will say it is a sponsor here with many rave reviews.  My question really isn't about the string maker as it is how do you measure for FF strings on Hill style bows.  Not a question asked too much, if at all on this thread (and I have read all of it) so I am hoping it might help others now or down the road.

I measure a proper length string strung on the bow under tension. If you add 1/4" you can always tighten it up by twisting. Keep in mind just a bit of length will be curved around the tips in the string grooves.

I finally got around to making my next quiver.

It's gonna be around 22" deep and roughly 8.75" wide when formed in a semi flat oval.

Now to make the bottom.

WOW Bud, that's looking good!!! I was pretty happy with my first attempt at a back quiver, but this is inspiring.

Please keep posting pics so some of us can learn a thing or two!

It's vegetable tanned leather. I'll darken it up with oil after finishing it. Hadn't done any more to it since the pics. Back at work now  :(

Well I got off the phone with James at JD Berry not too long ago.  He wasn't feeling "Pluto" as the name to his new forward handled american longbow so the name is now "Morningstar" And we were talking about the bow a little finalizing some specs.  I am having it made 50@26" 68" long with...
Well let me first say I am not a fan of Bamboo cores, something about them just doesn't sit well with me, but I decided to let him build this one with bamboo cores, clear glass front and back with yew under the clear glass. Going with a myrtle riser. The myrtle he has right now is real blond in color so its a departure from my standard darker colored risers.  We decided to go with yew front and back to match my "Misty Dawn"

So here shortly I will own the entire JD Berry American Longbow lineup, A "Vixen", "Misty Dawn" and a " Morningstar"  I am getting stoked.
