Like Charlie, I love tapered shafts from Hill bows.  They seem to fly like lasers.  Parallel are fine, but I perceive a difference.  

Another solid reason to shoot tapered shafts, when you order them, the best shafts are often used for tapered shafts, they are straighter, with good grain, because when they run a crooked shaft on the taper machine they would get garbage out. This means less straightening and more attention to weight groupings as well.

I think I'll be making some strings with tiny loops, I've made some, guess I never really noticed any difference.

I've noticed bowyers are cutting the string grooves more shallow all the time, I'm unsure if padded loops are even necessary anymore...my most recent bow had the padded loops protruding from the side of the bow. More apt to get rubbed.

I'm with you Nate. I keep checking in but there seems to be a change. I was encouraged when I saw your posts.
Recently bought a dozen Hill broadheads just because you should have them if you shoot a Hill bow even if you don't use them.  I found what they say about arrow flight is true. We've had some pretty gusty wind as of late and these heads stay on track. Using 5-1/2 sheild and parabolic on 1916 with glue in aluminum broadhead adapters and 35/55 GT's with brass glue in broadhead adapters out of a 50# @28 HH Wesley Special drawn 27-1/2.
I haven't worked up a set of Surewoods yet, that's next on the list. Suggestions here would be appreciated, heads are 160gr once file sharpened, shafts would be 28 BOP.
I picked one head as a sacrificial lamb for sharpening practice. I've been using mill bastards 10 to 6 inch and a 5/16 and 1/4 round chain saw files. It's going pretty well but any insights on sharpening would be appreciated. The No Mercy Zwickeys are ready to go but I would really like to give the Hill's a whirl in the quiver, gotta love the way they track in flight and I have had no problems with getting them to spin true.

58...I love the Hill heads...work well for me.  I use a 1/4" chainsaw file,  sharpen one side (rw), flattening the bevel from the factory bevel until I create the burr, then lightly take off the burr...done.  Jagged sharp edge that will take off hair but holds up better in a backquiver.  Looks like the edge of a soup can...lol.  I stay away from the flat file on the Hill heads.

A few pages back we were discussing lower brace heights for Sunset Hill bows.

I had my Sunset Hill brace height set at 6.25", just like my three Howard Hill bows.

Well, to make a long story short, my 78-pound Sunset Hill now has a 5.5" brace height, and it shoots my 750-grain ash arrows like a dream. The lower brace height turned it from a good shooter to a fantastic shooter. I wish I had tried that a long time ago.

This thread is invaluable.

My Hill brace is at 6-1/4 as well. With the 5-1/2 feathers and B50 a lower brace produces erratic grouping cock feather in or out. I can usually tell when brace height is off. Do you think shorter 4"-5" fletch would be a good trade for a lower brace height?? Love that chartruese going down range on the 5-1/2's.

Wow these pages flew by fast! A question about the small loops. A gentleman showed me a "self tightening loop" a while back. The idea is you do a tight loop for the lower, then a self tightening loop for the top. Here is a picture:
   

He couldn't remember how he tied it so he cut this off his bowstring for me to reverse engineer but I haven't figured it out just yet. I understand it does take a couple twists out of the string as it tightens up, but it does so consistently so maintaining a brace height isn't a problem.

So has anyone seen this, used this, and if so how did it work? If anyone knows the name of the loop or has a link to directions on making it I would appreciate it.

Question - with this thread at 900+ pages, and numerous other Hill related threads....including the John Schulz thread now running, there is a whole lot of info on a wide variety of topics that would be easier to research/access if it were segregated a bit.  Would there be any interest in a Howard Hill based sub forum?

Sorry! But I doubt that's gonna happen... and personally I think it's a good thing.. but that's just my opinion.

That was the reason behind my thinking Two4, as working with the "find" feature via the link on page one of this thread is cumbersome to say the least.  I can see that setting up such a sub forum would bring about a desire to do so for many more bowyers, etc. and that would be problematic.

Regardless.....here's how my day started out.
