I have had the best luck with wood arrows using the spine range of the draw weight of my bow. My HH is 53# at my 26.6" draw length and I am using tail tapered Douglas Fir shafts that were 50-55 spine groups. I have them cut to 28" with 125 grain field points. No matter how much I experiment with different arrow configurations I still wind up building arrows very close to the weight of my draw. Other folks may have a different opinion but I use a couple different methods for tuning and I still have the same results.

Muso,
I shoot carbons from my Berry's and I too shoot 3U.
I nock "around" 1/2", the vixen likes just shy of 3/4 and the others between 1/2" and 5/8".
At 30" I'm gonna guess you might need around 175gr up front depending on the shelf cut.

Personally, to get away from guessing I'd suggest a simplified bare shaft tuning.  I follow Byron Fergusons method of tuning, and in the grand scheme of things it may not be the BEST tune you can get but for myself it is. Also it works for Byron so I'm sure it will work just fine for me.  I can TRY to explain it in full detail for you but honestly I suggest picking up his DVD "tuning for extreme accuracy" . I did a review on it a while ago and it have done absolute wonders for me and my confidence.

My 2 cents

Got my first homemade straight end bow in the oven right now. Its been raining near every evening so I covered up the floor in the living room and got her cooking in the house. My Wife walks by looking at me out of the side of her eye but all is well. Unwrap time at 9:30 this evening.

Thanks for the tips fellas. I talked to Craig at HH Archery and he told me the bow was tillered for split, as most of them are and it may be a little quirky to tune, for a three under shooter. I have noticed that these bows definitely shoot better all around split finger and I wish I could shoot well split (I tried it for several months)  Brian, I have thought about getting Byron Ferguson's DVD actually.

Muss03  At your draw length you might be pulling around 45#. I think a 2016 might still be stiff without a little extra  point weight. Your first post said you tried a 2019. You could try a 1916 at that draw weight on a Hill style bow.   Norm

Alrighty. She came out of the form with tight glue lines at the fades and everywhere else. I was a bit worried as I have always used the fire hose method but sold all my bow making stuff maybe 5 years ago. This time I used the inner tube method and heck...it works. I knocked all the boogers off it in the dark outside with my headlight on my head. My shop is an old barn with no power except for a drop cord. I did not want to spend much time on it in the dark just clean it up enough to see if the lines were tight and they were. Thank You Lord.
I added a tad of backset hoping it would "spring back" to straight or very slight string follow. It has about 1/4" string follow.Thats at the 70" length. When I cut it back to my desired 66" it should be near straight. I`m pumped. Gotta go to the dentist in the morning but after that I`m off the next two days and hope to have this puppy shooting by lunch tomorrow and sprayed Thursday evening. Our deer season comes in on the 15th. I won`t be able to hunt till the 17th but hope to be toting my new "Hill" style bow. If I got arrows that will shoot out of it.I`ll try to post a pic or two tomorrow RC.

Hey RC please keep us updated as you move through the process.  I have the itch to build a Hill-style bow, but I've never built any bow.  I'm nervous about even buying the right materials.  I'm glad to see that your bow is moving in the right direction.  Good luck with the rest of the build.

That's outstanding RC. And I know it's coming and patience is a virtue but I feel you really should skip the dentist and get to the bow !!! LOL.  I'm following this closely

Looking forward to seeing that bow, Robert!

Next one you build, make it 68 or 69" at the same weight.

You might wind up likeing the longer bow better.

Got her ready for spray tomorrow. I don`t have bow scales but it feels like around 50@27. Bout what I was shooting for I would have been happy a pound or two heavier. I shot it some this evening with a string Pat sent me a while back. Thanks again Pat. It shoots a 2016 with a 175 grain head very good. I`m gonna put a "Tennis" rachet however you spell it grip on it after the finish cures . I`ve found I like the dished grip better than straight or locator so thats what she has. May put some camo paint on the limbs for doe killing. Depends on if the boo dulls some after its sprayed.
