I suppose that good hunts are a whole lot like a pot of good Gumbo. There's not one certain ingredient that makes the gumbo talk. It takes time, patience, and lots of spicy ingredients to make it great! Although this little hunt only encompassed two days, it was a a damn fine pot of Gumbo. The ingredients list started with wing shooting Dragonfly's to stalking pigs on open ground under Gods yeller Moon..! A bigger, more beautiful sky is hard to imagine at 2:00am in the morning. Oh, that is only the small ingredients list. Throw in some Gulf Shrimp, frog legs, and we'll slowly build to a grand finale. For now I think I'll just lift the lid, take a wiff of the fine aroma, and stir the pot a little. Ummmm, this is gonna be really good!

Mike and Jason should be home by around dark this evening. Its gonna take more than just me to bring this pot to a boil. CK

Well let's see where to start.  Well how about the beginning.  I was born in Bremerton Washington in 1951.  It was a sunny day and the tide has just come in.

OH not that beginning.

OK, we headed for S. Texas at 10:32 am after a mad dash to Boyd to pic up the new curve.  Anyway we finally were off and allowed ourself a little time to get excited.

Five and a half hours later and three stops (dangit I hate stops) we arrived at the intersection Curtis had said to meet him at.

A couple of minutes and a dust tornado came roaring down the road.  No small feet since the road was paved.  Curtis piled out and we all said out Howdies and shook hands a stuff and off we headed to his pig secret hangout.  thirty minutes of NasCar driving later we arrived with all of our paint and fenders attached. (that boy don't let any moss grow on him at all)

Camp went up in a hurry and we made a plan while looking over the place.  It was HOT. I mean frying an egg on my head HOT.  but Curtis was  hardly sweating and looked like he was looking for a sweatshirt to keep off the chill.  We set a Double bull on one likely spot and corned the appropriate places.

Back to camp we went and changed to hunting gear.

Jason and I presented Curtis with a new Windtalker with a bamboo belly.  He had to shoot it till we showed him the new Horne 58" curve.  That boy fell in love and started shooting everything in site.  First a unsuspecting dragonfly was darting around the camp.  Zip and Curtis picked him out of the air with a bow he had only shot 5 times.  I was impressed and put my bow in the truck.  LOL

Well we finally headed out to our spots with a couple of hours of light left.  It was still about 100 degrees and nothign was moving unless you count the sweat trickling down my back.

Ok Curtis your turn.

It was in the closing hours of Mojam that we secure the deal. We'd soon meet up in South Texas and try and fill a much needed fix for Jason. It seems that it had been awhile since Jason had connected with a game animal and Mike wanted his Sons confidence riding high before they left on a Moose hunt in the far North.

The handshakes and small talk were short the afternoon we met. A rev of twin Diesel F-250's and we were off to my lease property where the pig population seems to always be on the rise. We set out to do a once-over of the property and to choose our ambush locations for the evening. Once the minor details were out of the way we set up camp and Mike and Jason presented me with a new Wind Talker of their building. It is one awesome bow. I started flinging arrows till they pulled the Horne recurve from its hiding. Im not a recurve shooter but I immediately had to try the little beauty. I flung a few arrows till a dragonfly cruized by. I swung the bow low, drew and arrow and thwack! Unbelievebly, I ended the unsuspecting bugs afternoon hunt. I would have never mentioned the shot if Mike and Son hadn't been watching from lawn chairs only yards away. Talk about a luck shot!!!

The afternoon Sun hung low as we crossed the open Coastal hay field on our journey into the evening hunt. I was without a doubt that one of us three would be the Victor by nightfall. The evening hunt came to pass and none of us even saw a pig. I think the total deer count stood at around seventeen between all of us. At least the evening hunt wasn't a total bust. We all saw deer.

It was 10:00pm by the time we reached camp. I immediately struck a match and brought the small grill to life. We blackened the edges of some much needed sausage and talked of the pigs we were soon to pursuit under this awesome orange Moon. Tonights full Moon had left the country-side filled with light. We wolfed down the sausages, prepared our gear, and pressed forward into the night and Jasons inevitable future!

As we left the light of camp our eyes quickly adjusted to the brightness of the moonlight and we slipped quietly down the tree line leading to the back edge of the property and the good wind position. The plan was to hunt the coastal feild for the pigs that had torn it up so bad you couldn't drive a tractor across it.

Moving slow we kept the wind in our face and strained our eyes to see a few yards further into the dim light. As we approached the half way point of our wander, Curtis got pig small and whispered, "Piggies" We all hunkered and spotted the black shadows moving slowly in the field.

Jason was up, so he was elected by split vote to belly crawl to get the shot. Off he went and did well for a half hour or so but the dang pigs were unethical and slipped into the night. so back to the shadows of the edge and we were back in commando mode. Slipping slowly for another 100 yds and once again Curtis announces; "Big Pig". We sort out the location and spot it by the big oak I had been hunting near earlier in the evening. We plan the stock and once again send Jason to belly crawl the 200 plus yards to try and get the shot.

In the mean time Curtis and I think we see movement on the other side of the field and make a circle to put us in position. Yep it's pigs all right. At least we think it is. So Curtis starts making like a big snake through the 18' high coastal grass and closes the distance to 10 yds. He raises to shoot but stops and reexamines the dark spot that was the target of the stock. Heck he coulda killed that bush too.

Anyway Jason was on a pig, so we hunkered under an oak and spook in whispers til we saw Jason slipping along the edge our way. A couple of locator whistles and we were back together.

In the glow of a full moon, a lot is uncertain, especially ones since of what is real or not. As I peered into the dim light I saw a monstrous hog, Armed with my moose bow and moose arrows, I crawled under a barbwire fence and slinked slowly from shadow to shadow, slithering towards my goal.  Over about 40 minutes I closed the gap to about 50 yards.  I cam upon the double bull blind that we had set up for my dad’s evening hunt.  The hog was still rooting around under the large oak where we spotted him an hour earlier.  Once again I crawled under the fence and slowly made my way through the tall grass.  I rose to my knees, arrow nocked and ready to shoot.  Its funny how the moonlight plays with your head.  I felt kinda stupid when I realized I made a 200 yard crawling stock under a fence twice, through south Texas thorns and numerous fire ants, that I was about to shoot a record book bush.

gotta take my binos next time

Well, with two awesome stalks on bushes and Jasons stalk on the four little hogs complete, we turned and made the long walk back to camp. Once we made it into camp, we all dropped immediately into out tents and slept like babies. I awoke thinking I was in an intensive care Ward when I looked over at Mike but thats another story all together.

The Sun rose way too early to be rolling from my bunk so I closed my eyes and returned to sleep. A little later we rolled out and headed for a late morning still hunt along the ponds and small creeks that run throughout the lease property. The Bullfrogs are sure to take a beating!

(Mike/Jason) you guys are tellin it great. Please feel free to tell the tale. Im swamped at work for the next few days. Thanks,CK

Saturday morning was a bit slow getting started with the late night stalking of bushes and such.  Anyway we went to see if anything was still moving around and walked right up to a tank full of frogs.  Being belivers in shots of oppurtunity we load blunts and began stocking the frogs of size and others with the intent of filling a skillet for dinner.

Well to tell the truth my shooting left a little to be desired as I narrowly missed time and time again.  The frogs got so used to my close call arrows that they  didn't even jump in the water.  They just stayed in the shade til I was out of arrows and jump in when I went to retrieve.

Jason and Curtis had better luck and soon had one each.  Well Jason had one and Curtis had "frog envy"

Not much to eat, but Curtis isn't that big and don't eat much.  Good thing we had those two pounds of gulf shrimp to supliment.
