Got my first Mulie with a Recurve!!!!
« on: October 03, 2005, 07:20:00 PM »
Howdy all!! Just got back from an exciting weekend of hunting.

Things started off BAD when I was riding my Motorcycle/Huntin' Buggy down to my hunting site that's almost 300 miles from here. I had made it about 250 miles when I ran out of gas and a guy offered to pull me on into Alpine (about 10 miles) with a tow strap hooked up to his pickup. BAD IDEA!!!

I had a pretty bad crash, tore up my bike, screwed up my knee, right hand and elbow with some deep, deep road rash!! I was able to get it road worthy enough to get to our cabin late Friday night........

But, Saturday morning I could barely move my right arm, tried to draw my Reflex Grizzly Compound (68 pounds), and realized I was out of luck. I always take one of my recurves or longbows with me to play around with since I am just getting the hang of trad gear and I tried my Bear Grizzly (50 pounds) and found I could get almost a full draw out of it.

So......I gathered up my bow, arrows, camera, Nift-t-seat, and ghillie suit and headed to the easiest place I could get to that I wouldn't have to drag anything very far. It's a pretty good spot with 3 decent trails that funnel into this area.

I had been sitting about an hour when I had this little mulie come through!! He's no monster, but he came in at about 15 yards and gave me a perfect quartering away shot.

Believe it or not, that little Bear Recurve sent that arrow (Gold Tip 5575 with 100 grain brass insert and a 125 grain Thunderhead broadhead) straight thru and came out his right front shoulder. Luckily he only went about 20 yards and dropped!!

It was a lot of work getting him out of there with my busted up old body, but I was really excited and proud to be able to hunt after the miserable night I had the night before!!

Thanks for all the advice the past couple of months!! I would have never attempted this without all the help and how-to stuff on this site!!!

Good Job!
Just read your whole story and my post of "Good Job" was not enough    YOU ARE THE MAN!

To take a bad crash and limp into camp only to find out the next morning you can't pull back you regular hunting bow and then instead of packing up and getting you arm check out at the hostpital you grab your Bear and some "Pink Crested" arrows and and hot heavy Gillie suit and bag a trophy.

One heck of a good job!

Congratulations.  I'm still waiting for my first mule deer with a recurve, they are pretty elusive!

Tracy, yeah, I couldn't believe that all my camo got ripped up in the wreck!!  "[laffsmyl]"  I figured, what the heck, put it on and give it a try!!!

Really, tho, that Ghillie is pretty light and not too hot (in the shade    ) Once you get all the threads and strips trimmed up and out of the way of the bow string, it's pretty amazing how animals just DON'T see you! That little droptine walked within 7or 8 yards of me and I had to wait for him to pass before I could draw since I was on the ground right next to him and he still hasn't seen me!!  "[tunglaff]"

I have just recently begun to fletch my own arrows and the "hot pink" wraps were just some old automotive lettering material (2 mil) that I had from my pinstriping/lettering days, and I wanted to try some wraps but was too cheap to buy them. But I have to admit, that pink showed up REALLY good when I started looking for my arrow. I'm secure in my manhood, really I am!!!  "[heman]"

Ok, First great job on that buck. Is there any public land over around Alpine to hunt?
