Monday morning redemption...GARanteed!
« on: May 22, 2006, 06:56:00 PM »
Some of you may remember a thread I posted way back when about the woes of my weekend gar hunting adventure. (it was yesterday)

Not to be put off by misfortune and my own ineptitude, I once more loaded my bowfishing rig into the black Toyota and headed down to the creek. (that's "crik" for you westerners)

I didn't expect the action to be as hot as it had been yesterday... and it wasn't. But it twarnt bad.

Without any extra trips to the house for gear, no thundering rust buckets or free falling youngsters to interupt my quest I managed to land 19 short nose gar.

I have to admit I started out slow, but soon snapped right into the groove. Pure instinctive shooting joy.

I had one string where I made 8 consecutive hits.  "[heman]"

Get this! Twelve feet up on a bridge, average shot was 10 yards out... sound like a familiar scenario? Like I said, "anybody can hit a deer".  :D

Good going Charlie!    That looks like fun.  Thats the second time today I've seen a fish line spool like yours.  Where can I get one of those?  My plastic job is a nightmare.  That lone looks like the line on it will slip right off with very little friction. Thanks, Randy.

Randy... I'm not sure, but I think that's a Mohawk Shoot Thru reel. It's very old, but I've seen a pic of one on here recently.
A buddy of mine died a few years ago and left me his gear... the reel was just part of it.

Dano... missed a lot more than I hit, but figurin 1 hit for every three shots (if that good) it adds up to 60 shots in a two hour period. Not bad action.

Shakes... some people eat them, but I'm not one of them. I fed them to the turtles.

Denny... I heard a guy call them "Billy Gar" not sure where that comes from but I've heard them called some VERY creative names by pole and line fishermen.   :D   Hammer handles is a good one for sure.

Randy... I brought a thread to the top for you. Posted by Onfirecharlie. He's got a reel that looks just like mine... and yes, it does shoot with very little drag.

The shoot thru works really well for me too Charlie.  The only place I can find another one is at Sully's bowfishing.  Simple and deadly.  Great shootin Mr. Lamb!

Nice...i always pictured gar as much larger on average- is that not so.  I was figuring adults to be 20+lbs.  Obviosuly I've not seen one in person.
Few things are crystal clear in my mind; but to attempt to do some things that are honorable, or at least decent, seems to make some sense. A more traditional lifestyle fits...trad gang fits!
