Nice buck Shaun!  And on the ground yet - that is awesome!  That's something I have never done.  Have tried it some this year and had some close encounters, but haven't connected yet.  And as the rut kicks in here I find myself drawn more toward the trees again.
Wind forecast isn't favorable for my stands in the morning.  Maybe your tale will give me the motivation to try it on the ground again.
Congratulations!

Good story and cool deer!

However- the October moon is the Hunter's moon, the November full moon is the Beaver Moon (setting beaver traps).

So I guess that makes it a beaver buck.

huh..never heard that before. I always thought any full moon during the hunting season was called a hunters moon.

Shaun,

Great story! Congrats! Which Ghillie are you using?  Is it the Shaggie Longcoat like 3-Rivers sells?

I thought the October moon was the Harvest Moon - least that's what Iowegians call it. November being the Hunters Moon.

Gillie is the lightweight jacket, hat and face mask from Cabelas (Rancho Safari brand). Under $150 for the whole set up.

Finsihed cleaning him up. Double lung, straight side to side at half way up just behind the sholder. This puts the wound channel about 2 to 3 inches under the spine - why we should aim 1/3 of the way up on the body and why high hits don't work in the top 1/3 unless you hit spine or the big artery just under the spine.

Tenderloins, heart and liver on ice. Fan and low of 32 F tonight should chill him out nicely.

Pablo, thanks for the moon info. I'm wrong a lot but like to learn.

dorris, he was heavy. My back was just about healed up from a game dragging rodeo a few weeks back. Had to get out the heating pad after the trip home. I should stick to fawns or move south where the deer are smaller.

That's funny I was thinking I should move North where the deer are bigger. l.o.l. Nice story and pics. What a rush that must have been at 10 feet.

That's awesome Shaun! Nice deer. I knew you said that was your goal for this year, to take a deer on the ground with that suit.

I almost made it a double yesterday morning. I was on the ground as well and I had a 5pt come in to 6 yards. The only thing exposed was his head where he stopped and that's all it took for him to spot me, LOL. Maybe I need a Ghillie suit  :)
