The last hour of the last day
« on: October 25, 2008, 10:42:00 AM »
For a few months my friend Serge (Drifter2)and I planned a deer hunt in South East Ontario.

I hunted a few days with Serge last year on his hunting ground, and was waiting for this hunt so bad!

I knew the man, I knew the land, and last sunday I unpacked at Serge's place and felt welcomed by Serge's wife Kim instantly

Serge's place is a hunter's dream:
Marshes, beaver dams, cedars, maple, fields...

We hunted hard, saw deer every day, turkeys, partridges, geese, rabbit... I was in heaven for the all week...
Right there it was a complete success...

On Friday I was ready to savour these memories and go back to my ordinary life, but it was not the plan Serge had for me

On the last afternoon of this wonderful hunt, we were discussing the gameplan and I was suggesting an old stand bordering hard woods and a marsh, but Serge said that the open field we previously hunted might be the key.

Being the superb hunter that he is, I followed his advise and setup in a natural blind in acorner of the field

Right there, with about an hour of sunlight left, I picked up a movement at a hundred yards down.. a nice doe...I checked for a fawn while she headed to my corner of the field, but none followed her,and I knew the wind was good for me for a little while...

being sure now that she hadno fawn, and prepared for the shot with my heart rushing in my chest.

She came at about 12 to 15 yards and I decided to shot just before she cut my wind

I came at full draw, released, she bolted and I saw my yellow feathers thrown in the sky...I knew then it was a good hit, I stood up and saw her crashing in the field at about 80 yards

The arrow with a snuffer went right through the ribs and stopped on the opposite shoulder, and what I saw was the broken shaft and feathers flying...

It was a perfect hunt, nature was a feast, friendship was build and nothing could have been better...

Thank you to you Serge my friend   :notworthy:      :campfire:      :archer:

Good friends, good shooting, good hunting and a bonus, can't ask for anything else.
We spent a wonderful week my friend,we hunted the hard way all the way and we will do it again soon.
We passed-up on numerous doe with fawns waiting for a good dry one and patience finally paid off.

Excellent stuff!   :clapper:

What a great way to spend some time, and getting that doe is a bonus.  She'll be good on the table.

Great shooting Manny - I'm glad you didn't have to settle for "close" again!   :biglaugh:
