First Traditional Turkey
« on: May 20, 2008, 09:56:00 PM »
Last friday I got out of work early and headed out turkey hunting.  I set up on an oak ridge I thought that the birds might be roosting in hoping intercept a bird or at least locate some birds for the next morning.  I got my blind up and decoys out at 5:30, I called about every 20-30 minutes.  At 6:45 after a calling sequence I thought I heard something walking in the leaves to the west along the swamp but I wasn't sure due to the wind, so I gave a few soft yelps and clucks, and next thing I knew this bird was on his way in.  He came right in to the decoys in full strut as he went behind the hen decoy I started to draw but when he cleared the decoy he turned straight at me so I changed my focus from his wing butt to the base of his neck and shot.  The shot was 4 yards and right where I was looking, cutting his neck in two.  This was my third season of trying to kill my turkey with either my recurve or longbow.  On this hunt I used my 72lb brackenburry Legend II with 2419 alluminums, and 175 grain Razorcaps.

Congrats,  The closest I had a tom was about 35 yds.  Took the shot but missed. Ended up turkeyless again this year!
