Goats, Sheep, Pig in Santa Cruz Mtns- Pics!
« on: September 28, 2007, 01:17:00 PM »
Two weekends ago a group of us went to the East slope of the Santa Cruz Mountains to hunt some sheep and goats at the Jim Cox Ranch about two hours south of San Francisco. The ranch is 10-12 miles from the coast and gets Pacific breezes coming in year around. Cool in summer; freezing in winter ir the rule.
This is the view if you are a goat or sheep:

Our friend Tony shot this beautiful Barbados Goat on the first day. Behind him you can see the terrain; lots of cliffs and draws-ideal if you are four legged and in shape!

The ranch is 550 acres of nothing but vertical ground!

Here is Robert with a 234 lb Mouflon; this animal took hunter and hunted down a wild ride in to a canyon. Robert emptied his quiver-all good shots-and the Ram was still kicking.
We lookes at the blood trail later and most of it was likely from the hunters knees and elbows!

Yours truly with a dandy exotic shot while ground hunting on the second day:

One of the cool visitors regular at the camp

There's some more to come but
I gotta go make some money now so we will have to catch up later.

Way to go Bjorn. I have recently made the switch to traditional, but have hunted with my compound with Jim. I've taken some great pigs there. I usually hunt up at the Goat Patch in the evenings and stalk the brushy areas during the early mornings. pretty convenient place to go for us northern Californians. Did you see any shootable hogs?

Several of you have commented on the fox-beautiful for sure-there was a family of them. Anyhow we did have one compounder with us;and I'm not making this up-OK? When the fox showed up he wanted to go get his bow.....I had my size 12 loaded and waiting; but the guy remained where he was. We all belong to a great club-Bowhunters Unlimited in Saratoga, CA. It is mostly trad and there are maybe 10% compounders-all good guys everybody gets along great.

On with the post.
On the second day my son got a very nice young sow for the Thanksgiving center piece. Good going Adam!

That pic was taken with my new cell phone-can't get it any bigger-I think that's called 'marketing'. Better not let the mods see that pic or it will become the new size! LOL!

Robert also get this beautiful Barbados Sheep-that one is being mounted.

This is the BBQ area at the camp:

There are showers and toilets as well. Sleeping is in small bunkhouses and everything is done very well.

Which bow did you use Bjorn? You are going to tell us the stories, right?

How's the quality of the meat on those animals?

Beautiful pic's, by the way!

Congratulations--looks like an awesome time!

And one question, if I may--are the fees reasonable?

Take Care,

Used my ACS 49@28. I'm trying hard not to shoot anything else and stay dialed in. The meat on these animals is really good. Just needs some extra cooking time to get it tender. The Goat tastes like Beef, the Sheep is very good cooked into stew or sausage. And hog is hog- we have had some really good roasts and of course sausage.

You should send Larry some pics. He is looking for some success story pics. I was just on the phone with him and he was asking for me to send him some if I could.

The first animal that was shot by us would have made grear film-like all good hunts. About 15 minutes in to the first afternoon we were working our way up a bike track and we see this beauty Barbados Ram and another unidentified exotic. The Barbados continues to munch on branches and the other critter backs away a bit. Our friend Tony is granted first shot and he does not disappoint; at a full 25 yards he nails the Ram right in the heart lung area and the animal just stands there with buckled knees looking around. Tony goes for the insurance shot in the same area but by now the Ram is facing away and you can see in the pic the bloodied area under the eye socket? Well that's the broadhead emerging form the Goat's face. The beast died about 5 feet from the first hit and falls over a cliff but luckily ends up tangles up in brush. Easy retrieve.

Gotcha' Larry Hanify. I'm on their site in the  with my Goat from the previous trip..............I sure wish I had a decent pic of Adam and his hog; but it just won't go any bigger! And he killed his first hog with a St. Charles TBird. I'll send them my sheep and see what they think.
