The article is a little all over the place but much better than I would expect from the Times.

“having a bunch of guys racing through the woods with bow and arrows and making a sporting event out of it.”

I do say- I believe this chap forgot the bugles, horses, and dogs.  Quite.

I am Al Bottari, and I was contacted by the author for the article.  It was supposed to be about the burgeoning deer population on Long Island, the Urban Deer Management Program of NYB, Inc., and the loss of land access on L.I.  what it turned out to be is not even close to what was discussed over the course of several conversations and e-mails with the author.

My quotes were not in full, doctored to some extent, and the information was garbled to get the slant he was after.   For example, I never mentioned an "adrenaline-fueled seizure".  Also, I provided him with 2 examples in NYS where the Program has flourished with great success, and there was no mention of it.

My main reason for granting quotes was to get it out there that there is a deer problem on L.I. and across the state in municipalities that do not allow hunting in parks and private lands.  My intention was to not alienate anyone, but merely educate the public as to the effectiveness of conducting an urban bowhunt.  When given the options of either installing a deer fence, using police to shoot the deer, hiring a sharpshooter to hunt over bait piles at night with a light, or utilizing bowhunters, it's pretty obvious.  Bowhunting is the safer choice, the ethical choice, and in total the most viable choice.  And, we'll do it for free, where as the other options can carry a steep pricetag for the taxpayers to shoulder.

I'm disappointed at the overall tone of the article.

All the best, Al.

I wondered if you were the "Al". I've talked with Alex some through PMs about this article and told him about that very slant which he agreed with. Seems to me you would have made property damage cost, hunter for hire cost and animal related deaths part of your info and seeing as it was you who spoke with them I fully believe that they creatively edited your comments and left important information out.

Al....we gotta do the best we can.  When we have the opportunity, we sometimes need to jump on it.  The other alternative was the author getting some PETA representative to spout their side, complete with red paint.  Thank you for putting yourself on the line and trying.   Once you have done your part, it is out of your hands and control.

Many, maybe most, of the folks in the big cities, whether New York or Chicago or the like are no longer even remotely tied to the world around us.  They don't have a clue what ELSE goes on around them, just their city people thing. I mean no disrespect at all by that statement.

Heck, I live near Madison WI, a not so huge city in Wisconsin, where just last week around 650,000 licensed hunters (gun) took to the field for the yearly hunt.  This is not what I would call an anti hunting state, yet I am appalled by what I see and hear in the city itself.

I often hear, people make the statements, we should not hurt the bunnies and the pretty deer, then they cry and think they are  really in touch with reality, and you know what...they are....their own reality....which is different from mine.

You see, no matter what we as humans do on this earth, we are taking up space....a lot of it.  Whether we eat meat or only bean burgers, we take up space.  Don't think so......look around you.   Your yard used to house critters.  Your neighborhood was probably a field at some point in time.  How about that street in front of your house, and the streets that tie into it, and the highway, and the shopping mall, and yes, the golf course and on and on.   Heck those bean burgers came from fields that lie barren and naked for 9 months of the year.

For every one of us, we take up the space of thousands of critters, displacing them and endangering them.  But, we don't see it that way......they (people as a group, not me or us personally) see hunting, and maybe fishing as abuse that is bad, but don't see , can't see, all the rest.

The fact is, human-kind impacts the whole earth, wild life included, far more, and in far more deadly ways than hunting ever did.   But I guess that doesn't count, does it.  We all really need another mall...right ?

I am here on this earth right now, and with luck, I may be on this earth for another 20-30 years.  With a bit more luck, there will be fields and woods for me to walk thru for all that time. But I sure do worry about that.

All I can do right now is the best job that I can to show another point of view to those that refuse to see it, to teach those that want to see it, and to live my life the best that I can.  The rest is outside my control.

Once again, thank you Al, for trying to show that world that we, as bowhunters want to help and care.

Realistically, I think the article was as good as can be expected by a run-of-the-mill journalist who probably buys "meat" from a supermarket, and knows even less about hunting:

Quote: "This carcass had a small round wound in the front left shoulder, and he pulled the metal head of a bow out."

...That musta been SOME shot!!  Methinks I'ma gonna get me a bronze bow next year and throw it at the deer (does this guy even have an editor??)

Nicely put, ChuckC.  And thanks for making an attempt to educate folk, Al.

i 100% agree with the guy.we should not allow such savagery as to let a bunch of bow toaten'crazys' loose on long island.instead we should turn loose about 3000 cougars,5000 wolves,6000grizzlys,and about 4000 hyeanas just for good measure and let nature take its course.

               and AL, you have my    too. I would just add that news, all news, always get manipulated by medias, all medias, to fit their agenda. Although they was an expected good amount of less than flattering, sometime idiotic rambling, (probably to appease the other side)I believe there was definitely a positive side to this article that deserves credit. And in this day and age, some truth is better than no truth, especially in a mainstream publication like the NY Times.

Al Bottari:  There are still a few avenues left for you to try.  Certainly, it's worth calling the reporter to express your dissatisfaction with his interpretation of the information you provided for him.  Do this in as nice a way as you can.  Such a conversation will also provide an opportunity for you to supply additional information, which could lead to a second story, which may be more accurate.  At the least, it may keep this person from making the same kinds of errors if he/she ever writes about that topic again.

Second, you can write a letter to the editor.  You don't want to attack the reporter here or spend a lot of time correcting his errors and misinterpretations.  Rather, use it as a jumping off point to state your/the state's case, i.e. provide your rationale for bowhunting to control urban deer populations and illustrate with the examples you have that shows how it has worked.  Believe it or not, these are often published, and people read them.  Good luck.

Thank you all for the positive repsonses.  I'm still bummed as to how the content was manipulated.  The original concept is nowhere to be found.  Hopefully, some good will come of this, as to the opening of lands for hunter access, and saving of taxpayers dollars for something that we'd be happy to do for free.  Once again, thanks for the support.

Problem is that they are well funded and politically/media connected fools who while aren't the largest threat are a big contributing factor to our troubles. To dismiss them outright is way too dangerous. There are reasons why HSUS is headquartered in DC and Hollywood.

My Uncle believed CBS when they went to him to make a documentary about "the heritage of hunting in America".
They really made an antihunting program called "the guns of Autumn".
My Uncle was a smart guy; and he got duped by those 'reporters'; and Al; it sounds your a bit put out by the intrepretions of what you said and what came out on paper..
That is the lesson; to be aware this happens.
I don't know the legal remedy to this; like perhaps a short preamble to whatever you say; that you have the opprotunity to reply in full to undue any falsehood; or misinterpretation of what you are about to disguss with them??
Seems like a chance for a gauranteed reply would have helped my Uncle on his deathbed when he still regretted the mess he got into - and have given Al a way to feel better about what happened to him....
 food for thought.  :campfire:

I've been interviewed before for other publications, and this is the first time that it has happened.  Whenever I am asked for a comment on an issue, I always insist on a fair shake.   If you print what I say, exactly how I say it, then there's no problem.  If you do not, then this is the last time I will give you the courtesy of an interview.

I've submitted articles, and letters to many publications, and even to those who are of the anti-hunting, tree-hugging mentality.  Even those folks printed it as is, never doctoring it up or switching it around.

It was the first and the last time for this guy.  Thanks for the support, it is greatly appreciated. Live and learn.
