FYI Deer Hunting Ohio

ODNR is strongly considering and will likely start a doe only muzzleloader season in the middle of October this Fall. Just thought anyone who hunts Ohio would want to know. It might change your hunting plans for this Fall. In my opinion, it will likely ruin any bow hunting you may want to do here in mid to late October or early November...  :(

I agree just another excuse for people to tag more "Bow killed" bucks with round entry and exit wounds.
I don't think doe only seasons will excite too many folks.  Just give people reason to go into woods with gun and hunt rutting bucks.

For me, this just stinks. I've been stewing about it all day and even sent an e-mail to ODNR.

Hey buckeye hunter and any other interested Ohions ,March 2nd from noon till 3pm if you go to your local  district headquarters  ,you have a chance to voice your opinions on this and any other topics that are slated as potential rule changes to our laws.
I plan on attending to voice my opinion on this as well as a couple other things.
I really think the insurance companies have a big influence over changes like this as it obviously helps their purse strings . Every deer that's gone before the rut is one less to dash out in front of an unsuspecting car  when they go through their crazy  week.

We heard it will be doe only even if you are bow hunting. The deer herd around my hunting grounds is almost nonexistent now. I think it has more to do with being able to sell more doe tags.   :(

I live in DE and I have to agree.  Not to mention the bucks who get "mistakenly" killed during those days.  Being an october bowhunter in Delaware is not what it used to be.

Portage Co lost 60% of the herd to EHD this year. I thought our numbers were down state wide.
What is the reason.

Good point ! So they want to decrease it even more ? Very disappointing !

I believe the DOW is saying it's only going to be a two day ML season for the early one.

They're saying that it should increase rutting activity due to fewer does around at the time of the rut.

Could it be? Maybe?

The muzzleloader doe season is only proposed for 2 days, but serious bowhunters know what 200,000 people in the woods does to deer activity overall.

With youth shotgun only 3 weks later, the future of public land rut hunting in Ohio doesn't look good....

I will be at the information/hearing on these changes March 3rd.

Charles, this will be interesting to hear how this comes about.  I've got family just north of Bucyrus and I'm sure I'll hear Dad talking about this one.

We have a doe season in Missouri and I've always argued if you have to have a doe season why not hold it prior to the rut?  It seems foolish to waste the energy of a rut on does that are going to be killed later.

That being said, the real question for Game and Fish Departments is, "do we really need a special and separate doe season?"

I know these seasons are put in place to provide extra opportunity and to address high deer density issues but I believe if you told a group of hunters, "here's your week and that's all you get", the results would be the same.

We have never had a doe only season in Ohio. There is honestly no need for it on public land. Public land numbers are well in check for most areas with a couple exceptions.

I can see the point of having doe season early, if you are going to have it at all. We really don't need it though.

The real issue is private land in Ohio. ODNR needs to find a way to encourage land owners to allow hunting. So many people are against it that the numbers of deer are honestly rediculous is some places. For instance, I can go to work and easily see a dozen deer in the field by the school every morning. There is no hunting allowed in that area and the deer are everywhere. Vegetation is completely destroyed and there are always deer at the bird feeders.

Charlie, is it also proposed that they are doing away with the "bonus" shotgun weekend if they add the doe only muzzleloader weekend? I heard something about it the other day, just curious if it's true...I would be happy about that if they ditch the shotgun weekend!   :archer:
