Need to add weight to arrows?

Hi everyone,
I have had problems with penet. on deer. I want to add weight to my arrows. I shoot beman 500's at 29". My bow is a browning wasp 47# at 28" but i pull about 27" so about 45#. I would like to go to a stiffer arrow maybe? and heavier broadhead. What would be a good setup? Any suggestions will help. I did try 125gr field points in the 500's and the did not fly good.

You shoot the same as me. I get great penetration with 28" 1916s with 125 gn Stingers. I think you need to weaken those 500s with 100gn brass inserts and a heavy head.

Thanks for the reply. My arrow flight is pretty good with 100gr field points and then i tried 125gr and they flew horribly. But you think i should should 225 up front?

Who makes the 1916's?

Easton makes them, they are an aluminum alloy shaft.  You might like them in the legacy configuration, they look like footed cedar shafts. Check out 3Rivers Archery.....

The 500s are pretty stiff. I'd go at least 225 to weaken them.

I seem to get good flight now with my 100gr field points. However my fixed blade broadheads plane hard bottom left. What is the explanation for that?

The beman 500's are the weakest spined carbon arrow that beman makes, why weaken them more? According to the charts, 45# at 28in is border line between 500s and 400s (a stiffer shaft)???

I shot 500's out of a Toelke Whip that was 53#@29" (my draw length) and I needed a 30.5" arrow with 175grain head to get good flight.  I'd double check your flight by bareshafting that 500...Mike

I have not seen many recurves that will shoot well with 100gn point on 29" 500s?A 175gn point will get you closer to what you need on spine.The charts will work for recurves but only if you are shooting a past centershot riser and rest.Off the shelf and on a bow that is not cut past center the arrows are going to be too stiff if you use the charts.I think if you shoot some bareshafts you will see that your setup is not tuned as well as you think.jmo

How do you set up stuff to test with bareshafts? Distance? How to hold the paper, etc...???

Nope, the Energy shaft is available in sizes from 360 to 1000.  Gr/inch, they are a little on the littler side of things though.

I shoot 54-56# BW at 27in draw with 28in Beman Classic 500's with 100gr inserts and 125gr pts and they bareshaft perfectly.  My arrows weigh around 520grs. and penetrate very well.  Definitely sounds like your current arrows are stiff and will benefit from adding some tip weight.  Do some bareshaft tuning and it will tell you exactly what you need to know.  Good luck!  Mark
