Neat Looking Skinner
« on: January 18, 2008, 02:55:00 PM »
I saw a great looking skinner a little while ago.  Today I tried to forge up my version of it.  I left it rather beefy and will probably do a hollow grind as the blade is rather deep.  Might just end up on the bear skinnin' table this spring for reviews...Doc

Course mine won't look this pretty!

My rough forged shape.

Love that handle material, and the Damascus is gorgeous.

Call it hunch, but I think I'm gonna like your version better   :)    I love the simple damascus, but a lot of the new stuff is just too busy!

That mammoth ivory is something else though!!

I put a hollow grind on the skinner with a 10" wheel today.  The larger wheel make the hollow grind less aggressive but still takes a good amount of steel out of the blade.  Especially since I left the forged blank fairly thick.  It leaves the blade with a nice profile and plenty of backbone to the spine.  That's all for today as I gotta go root my New England team on...Doc

PS:  The original skinner was make by Master Bladesmith Ray Kirk.  It is just an awesome knife.
